Formed after the demise of Gossard and Ament's previous band, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for nearly five years, and has gone on to become one of the highest-selling rock records ever, going 13× platinum in the United States. Released in 1993, Pearl Jam's second album, Vs., sold over 950,000 copies in its first week of release, setting the record for most copies of an album sold in its first week of release at the time. Their third album, Vitalogy (1994), became the second-fastest-selling CD in history at the time, with more than 877,000 units sold in its first week.
One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Pearl Jam's members often shunned popular music industry practices such as making music videos or participating in interviews. The band also sued Ticketmaster, claiming it had monopolized the concert-ticket market. In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as having "spent much of the past decade deliberately tearing apart their own fame."
Pearl Jam had sold more than 85 million albums worldwide by 2018, including nearly 32 million albums in the United States by 2012, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 in its first year of eligibility. They were ranked eighth in a readers' poll by Rolling Stone magazine in its "Top Ten Live Acts of All Time" issue. Throughout its career, the band has also promoted wider social and political issues, from pro-abortion rights sentiments to opposition to George W. Bush's presidency. Vedder acts as the band's spokesman on these issues.

I Believe in Miracles
Pearl Jam Lyrics

Believed in miracles 'cause I'm one
I've been blessed with the power to survive
After all these years I'm still alive
I'm out here kickin with the band
I am no longer a solitary man
Everyday my time runs out
Oh I belive in miracles
I believe in a better world for me and you
Oh Oh I believe in miracles
I believe in a better world for me and you
Tattooed your name on my arm
I always said my girl's a good luck charm
If she can find a reason to forgive
Then I can find a reason to live
I used to be on an endless run
Believed in miracles 'cause I'm one
I've been blessed with the power to survive
After all these years I'm still alive
Oh I believe in miracles
I believe in a better world for me and you
Oh Oh I believe in miracles
I believe in a better world for me and you
I close my eyes and think how it might be
The future's here today
It's not too late, it's not too late oh
I believe in miracles
I believe in a better world for me and you
Oh I believe in miracles
I believe in a better world for me and you
The song "I Believe in Miracles" by Pearl Jam is a testament to the band's survival, both as individuals and as a collective entity. The lyrics speak of overcoming obstacles, believing in oneself, and finding hope in the face of adversity. The opening lines, "I used to be on an endless run, believed in miracles 'cause I'm one," suggest that the singer has faced many challenges in their life and has come out stronger because of them. It's a reminder to the listener that, no matter how tough the road may be, they too can persevere and come out the other side.
As the song progresses, the singer shares how they've been able to find joy in life despite past struggles. They're no longer alone, they're now surrounded by friends and loved ones. The line "I am no longer a solitary man" suggests that the singer has found a sense of community and belonging. The chorus, with its memorable repetition of "I believe in miracles," reinforces the idea that there is always hope for a better future. It's a call-to-action for the listener to remain resilient and steadfast in their beliefs.
The final lines of the song paint a picture of a brighter future. The singer is optimistic that the world can improve, and it's not too late to make a positive change. The message of the song is ultimately one of hope and perseverance. It's a reminder that, even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
