Formed after the demise of Gossard and Ament's previous band, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for nearly five years, and has gone on to become one of the highest-selling rock records ever, going 13× platinum in the United States. Released in 1993, Pearl Jam's second album, Vs., sold over 950,000 copies in its first week of release, setting the record for most copies of an album sold in its first week of release at the time. Their third album, Vitalogy (1994), became the second-fastest-selling CD in history at the time, with more than 877,000 units sold in its first week.
One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Pearl Jam's members often shunned popular music industry practices such as making music videos or participating in interviews. The band also sued Ticketmaster, claiming it had monopolized the concert-ticket market. In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as having "spent much of the past decade deliberately tearing apart their own fame."
Pearl Jam had sold more than 85 million albums worldwide by 2018, including nearly 32 million albums in the United States by 2012, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 in its first year of eligibility. They were ranked eighth in a readers' poll by Rolling Stone magazine in its "Top Ten Live Acts of All Time" issue. Throughout its career, the band has also promoted wider social and political issues, from pro-abortion rights sentiments to opposition to George W. Bush's presidency. Vedder acts as the band's spokesman on these issues.

Keep on building your floors
Keep on just as before
Pay disasters no mind
Didn't get you this time
No prints left at the crime
Our ship's come in and it's sinking
Of everything that's possible
In the hearts and minds of man
Somehow it is the biggest things
that keep on slipping right through our hands
By thinking we're infallible
Oh we are tempting fate instead
Ah, time we best begin here at the end, end
Wanna third second chance
Put your faith in big hands
Pay no more than a glance
All good things come to an end
This could be good as it gets
How's the view from the fence?
You think we've been here before
You are mistaken
Of everything that's possible
In the hearts and minds of man
When progress could be plausible
In reverse we curse ourselves yeah
Oh yeah by thinking we're infallible
Oh we are tempting fate instead uh uh uh
Time we best begin here at the end, end
Of everything that's possible
In the hearts and minds of man
Ye yeah somehow it is the biggest things
That keep on slipping right through our hands
Hey by thinking we're infallible
Oh, we are tempting fate instead
Oh yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
Oh yeah
Yeah
Oh time we best begin
Here at the end, end
Here at the end, end
Keep on locking your doors
Keep on building your floors
Keep on just as before
The song "Infallible" by Pearl Jam is a cautionary tale about the consequences of humans thinking they are invincible and infallible. The lyrics encourage listeners to be humble and mindful of the bigger picture by pointing out how disasters and failures can occur no matter how well we prepare. The line "Keep on locking your doors, keep on building floors, keep on just as before, pay disasters no mind" is a reminder that we should continue to protect ourselves and our belongings, but we should not become complacent about the possibility of tragedy. The lyrics suggest that we can never be fully prepared for all the possible risks and disasters, and that we should not think we are immune to them.
The chorus "Of everything that's possible in the hearts and minds of man, somehow it is the biggest things that keep on slipping right through our hands" reflects on how humans tend to focus on big projects and ambitions, neglecting smaller things that matter. They believe that people's arrogance and self-importance can cloud their judgement and make them disregard the little details that can make a big impact in their lives. The song further emphasizes that destiny is shaped not just by the big ambitions, but also the little and simple things that we ignore. The bridge "Wanna third second chance, put your faith in big hands" encourages one to trust in the help of others when things do not go as planned.
Overall the song "Infallible" is reflective on our humanity, by highlighting how self-importance, arrogance and neglect can lead to disaster and consequently failures. And how, despite our best efforts, we should not always trust our own wisdom, but be open to collaborations with others and remember that even the little things count when it comes to shaping our destinies.
