Kick Out the Jams
Pearl Jam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Kick out the jams motherfuckers !
Yeah! I, I, I, I, I'm gonna
I'm gonna kick 'em out ! Yeah !
Well i feel pretty good
And i guess that i could get crazy now baby
Cause we all got in tune
And when the dressing room got hazy now baby
I know how you want it child
Hot, quick and tight
The girls can't stand it
When you're doin'it right
Let me up on the stand
And let me kick out the jam
Yes, kick out the jams
I want to kick'em out !

Yes i'm starting to sweat
You know my shirt's all wet
What a feeling
In the sound that abounds
And resounds and rebounds off the ceiling

You gotta have it baby
You can't do without
When you get that feeling
You gotta sock'em out
Put that mike in my hand
And let me kick out the jam
Yes ! Kick out the jams
I want to kick'em out
( guitar )

So you got to give it up
You know you can't get enough Miss Mackenzie
Cause it gets in your brain
It drives you insane
With the frenzy

The wigglin guitars girl
The crash of the drums
Make you wanna keep-a-rockin'
Till the morning comes

Let me be who i am
And let me kick out the jam

Yes, kick out the jams
I done kicked em out !!!

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, “Kick out the jams motherfuckers!” sets the rebellious and confrontational tone for the rest of the lyrics. The phrase “kick out the jams” is repeated throughout, referring to unleashing and liberating oneself through music, dance, and unrestrained behavior. Lead singer, Iggy Pop, who wrote the song, explained that it was inspired by the energy of the MC5’s live performances and the desire to express and spread that energy.

The chorus of “Kick out the Jams” is an anthem for breaking free from societal constraints and self-expression. The lyrics “Let me up on the stand / And let me kick out the jam /Yes, kick out the jams / I want to kick'em out!” are a call to action for the audience to stand up and join in the excitement and energy of the music. The repeated uses of “I” and “you” reinforce the individuality and power of personal expression.

The verses of the song describe the experience of being captivated by the music and feeling its effects on the body and mind. The imagery of the “dressing room got hazy” and the feeling of sweat and exhaustion emphasizes the physicality and intensity of the experience. The lyrics also suggest a sexual undertone, with the reference to doing it “hot, quick and tight” and the role of the girls in enjoying the music.

I've been going through all the Kick Out the Jams, and I think this may be my favorite. Of course...it took them twice as many people to rock it as hard as MC5.

Dave Anchovies

Arm does a great job...not the greatest MC5 track, but much better than i expected. Rage Against the Washingmachine get credit for the WORST version...less inspired than a 70 year old Brother Wayne and a lesser cast of hired guns.

SSS

it's like a dream moment.. you get 2 of the best bands of the 90's.. put them together in front of thousands and thousands of brazilians and let them play a cover of one of the most revolutinary american bands of all times.. FUCKING AMAZING!!!

James Bradner

epicmeade

By bringing Mark Arm and Steve Turner onstage this is also a Green River reunion since Green River was Mark Arm, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Steve Turner. I was working at a club called the Chatterbox in 1987 when Green River played there. And they instantly became my favorite band at that time and I saw them every time they played San Francisco after that. I also saw Pearl Jams first small club shows in San Francisco because they had former Green River members so I knew they would be great. But I was unprepared for just how great they would be until Eddie Vedder came out and started singing. This video is making me very nostalgic for those great times in the 1980s and 90s.

Yes, I have to agree, best cover I've seen to this song. People don't rock like that anymore, it's sad.
