Man of the Hour
Pearl Jam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tidal waves don't beg forgiveness
Crashed and on their way
Father he enjoyed collisions; others walked away
A snowflake falls in may.
And the doors are open now as the bells are ringing out

'Cause the man of the hour is taking his final bow
Goodbye for now.

Nature has its own religion; gospel from the land
Father ruled by long division, young men they pretend
Old men comprehend.

And the sky breaks at dawn; shedding light upon this town
They'll all come â??round
Cause the man of the hour is taking his final bow
Good bye for now.

And the road
The old man paved
The broken seems along the way
The rusted signs, left just for me

He was guiding me, love, his own way
Now the man of the hour is taking his final bow

As the curtain comes down
I feel that this is just goodbye for now

Overall Meaning

The song "Man of the Hour" by Pearl Jam is a reflection on mortality and the passage of time. The imagery used in the song is both natural and universal, touching on the unstoppable forces of nature and the inevitability of aging. The opening lines, "Tidal waves don't beg forgiveness, Crashed and on their way, Father he enjoyed collisions; others walked away," evoke the idea of a powerful force, like an ocean wave, that is uncontrollable and unstoppable. This compares to the father figure in the song who was also a dominant force in the singer's life, one who enjoyed conflict and confrontation with others, while the others would rather avoid this type of chaos.

As the song progresses, the lyrics touch on the idea of life being cyclical, as represented by the snowflake falling in May. This natural phenomenon disrupts the expected patterns, yet it is a reminder that life is unpredictable and rarely goes as planned. The idea of mortality is brought up again with the line "the man of the hour is taking his final bow, goodbye for now." This refers to the inevitable end that all of us will face sometime in the future. The old man's teachings are remembered fondly as he is likened to someone who paved the way for the singer, guiding them in their own way.

Overall, "Man of the Hour" is a poignant song that reflects on life's fleeting nature, but also the idea that we are all a product of our own experiences and those around us.

I am listening to this song in loving honor of one of my most beloved schools. I had attended a private university in Belmont, California starting back in January of 2015, and I finally graduated from it back in June of 2017. Notre Dame de Namur University had helped me overcome many of my fears, and it also gave me power, wisdom, and courage to help me get through even the most difficult times in my life. Not only did it give me the best form of education, but it also helped me make the best friends for life, as well as helping me overcome the loss of my late grandfather who passed away a month before I started my first semester at NDNU.

As of yesterday, March 31st, 2020, NDNU had sent me a letter basically saying that they are now on the verge of closure due to a strong lack of enrollment and also an overwhelming financial crisis that the school itself is facing alongside the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area. By the time I had heard the news, I had immediately began to look back and realized that I had spent the best times of my life when I entered that school. Yes, the school may have been expensive, but it was still one of the best schools I had ever been in.

But sadly, given how bad things are in the SF Bay Area, the school is now facing the dangers of foreclosure. I cannot say for sure if the school WILL survive, but at this point, I am already prepared to expect the worst for it as I wish the very best for those who attend NDNU.

Thank you for everything, NDNU. You really helped me become a stronger person for life.

"A man tells so many stories that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal."
