Formed after the demise of Gossard and Ament's previous band, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for nearly five years, and has gone on to become one of the highest-selling rock records ever, going 13× platinum in the United States. Released in 1993, Pearl Jam's second album, Vs., sold over 950,000 copies in its first week of release, setting the record for most copies of an album sold in its first week of release at the time. Their third album, Vitalogy (1994), became the second-fastest-selling CD in history at the time, with more than 877,000 units sold in its first week.
One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Pearl Jam's members often shunned popular music industry practices such as making music videos or participating in interviews. The band also sued Ticketmaster, claiming it had monopolized the concert-ticket market. In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as having "spent much of the past decade deliberately tearing apart their own fame."
Pearl Jam had sold more than 85 million albums worldwide by 2018, including nearly 32 million albums in the United States by 2012, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 in its first year of eligibility. They were ranked eighth in a readers' poll by Rolling Stone magazine in its "Top Ten Live Acts of All Time" issue. Throughout its career, the band has also promoted wider social and political issues, from pro-abortion rights sentiments to opposition to George W. Bush's presidency. Vedder acts as the band's spokesman on these issues.

My Generation
Pearl Jam Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Talkin' 'bout my generation...
Just because we...get around...
Talkin' 'bout my generation...
Things they do will all go c-c-cold...
Talkin' 'bout my generation...
Hope I die before I get old...
Talkin' 'bout my generation...
Why don't ya all...fuck off...
Talkin' 'bout my generation...
Don't try to d-d-dig what we all say...
Talkin' 'bout my generation...
I'm not tryin' to cause a b-b-big sensation...
Talkin' 'bout my generation...
Talkin' 'bout my,my,my,my,my,my...generation...
My generation...it's my generation,baby...
My generation...it's my generation,baby...
Why don't ya all fade away...
Now don't try and dig what we all say...
I'm not tryin' to cause a b-b-big sensation...
Talkin' 'bout my,my,my,my,my,my...generation...
My generation...my generation,baby...
Talk,talk about,my generation...what about...
The lyrics to Pearl Jam's song My Generation are a nod to the frustrations felt by the younger generation with the older generation. The song is a cover of the classic track by The Who, and Pearl Jam's version adds a grungier, more rebellious edge. The opening lines, "People try to put us....talkin' 'bout my generation..." suggest that older people try to label and categorize younger generations, but the young don't necessarily fit into these molds.
The lyrics go on to say, "Just because we...get around...things they do will all go c-c-cold..." which is a criticism of the older generation's lifestyle and values. The younger generation feels that the traditional ways of life will inevitably become outdated and irrelevant. The chorus repeats the line, "Talkin' 'bout my generation...hope I die before I get old..." which is a rejection of the idea that one should slowly fade away as they age. Rather, the younger generation desires to live fast and die young, leaving a lasting impact on the world.
Overall, the lyrics to My Generation by Pearl Jam are an expression of frustration and a rallying cry for the younger generation to embrace their unique perspective and rebel against the expectations of the older generation.

LYRICS
Woo
I'm ahead, I'm a man
I'm the first mammal to wear pants, yeah
I'm at peace with my lust
I can kill 'cause in god I trust, yeah
It's evolution, baby
I'm at piece, I'm the man
Buying stocks on the day of the crash
On the loose, I'm a truck
All the rolling hills, I'll flatten 'em out, yeah
It's herd behavior, uh huh
It's evolution, baby
Admire me, admire my home
Admire my son, he's my clone
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
This land is mine, this land is free
I'll do what I want but irresponsibly
It's evolution, baby
I'm a thief, I'm a liar
There's my church, I sing in the choir:
(Hallelujah, hallelujah)
Admire me, admire my home
Admire my son, admire my clones
'Cause we know, appetite for a nightly feast
Those ignorant Indians got nothin' on me
Nothin', why?
Because it's evolution, baby!
I am ahead, I am advanced
I am the first mammal to make plans, yeah
I crawled the earth, but now I'm higher
2010, watch it go to fire
It's evolution, baby
Do the evolution
Come on, come on, come on
