Formed after the demise of Gossard and Ament's previous band, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for nearly five years, and has gone on to become one of the highest-selling rock records ever, going 13× platinum in the United States. Released in 1993, Pearl Jam's second album, Vs., sold over 950,000 copies in its first week of release, setting the record for most copies of an album sold in its first week of release at the time. Their third album, Vitalogy (1994), became the second-fastest-selling CD in history at the time, with more than 877,000 units sold in its first week.
One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Pearl Jam's members often shunned popular music industry practices such as making music videos or participating in interviews. The band also sued Ticketmaster, claiming it had monopolized the concert-ticket market. In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as having "spent much of the past decade deliberately tearing apart their own fame."
Pearl Jam had sold more than 85 million albums worldwide by 2018, including nearly 32 million albums in the United States by 2012, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 in its first year of eligibility. They were ranked eighth in a readers' poll by Rolling Stone magazine in its "Top Ten Live Acts of All Time" issue. Throughout its career, the band has also promoted wider social and political issues, from pro-abortion rights sentiments to opposition to George W. Bush's presidency. Vedder acts as the band's spokesman on these issues.

Sleeping by Myself
Pearl Jam Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Down below I always kept it to myself
Now I believe in nothing
Not today as I move myself out of your sight
I'll be sleeping by myself tonight
I could never go with no one else
The hurt don't show but who knows, time will tell
And I can't see this turning out right
Oh I'll be sleeping by myself tonight
Forever be sad and lonely
Forever never be the same
Oh I close my eyes and wait for a sign
Am I just waiting in vain?
Oh I close my eyes and wait for a sign
Am I just waiting in vain?
Oh I believe in love and disaster
Sometimes the two are just the same
I'm beginning to see
What's left of me is gonna have to be free to survive
Oh I'll be sleeping by myself tonight
I believe in nothing, but the pain
And I can't see this turning out right
Oh I'll be sleeping by myself
I'll be sleeping by myself
I'll be sleeping by myself tonight
The lyrics of Pearl Jam's "Sleeping By Myself" carry themes of loneliness and heartbreak, as the singer confesses to having kept his feelings to himself and losing the woman he loves to another man. He is left feeling empty, believing in nothing but the pain he feels. The repetition of the line "I'll be sleeping by myself tonight" serves as a poignant reminder of his solitude and the sense of finality that comes with a relationship ending.
The lyrics suggest that the singer's inability to express his feelings may have contributed to the loss of the relationship. He admits that he "could never go with no one else" and that "the hurt don't show but who knows, time will tell." This implies that the pain he feels is deeper than what can be seen on the surface, and that he may have been trying to hide his true feelings. He also acknowledges that he is unsure if he is just "waiting in vain" for a sign that things will work out.
As the song progresses, the singer begins to acknowledge that he needs to let go to survive. He believes in "love and disaster" and acknowledges that sometimes the two are the same. He realizes that what is left of him needs to be free to move on and find happiness.
Overall, the lyrics of "Sleeping By Myself" are a poignant exploration of heartbreak, loneliness, and the struggle to move on from a lost love.
