Daylight
Peder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They have all gone to the city
They all walk down the same dead end street
Standing in line looking for a sign
Between the tall buildings where the sun never shines

It's taken the peace from the shade of these trees
Watching you fade away
You need some sunshine
You need some daylight
You need some sunshine
You need some daylight

And it makes me
Ever so sad to find that
You are going mad
Losing yourself within this maze
Just turn around and leave that place
You must turn around and leave this place
Please wake up and change your ways

You need some sunshine
You need some daylight
You need some sunshine
You need some daylight
You need some sunshine
You need some daylight
You need some sunshine
You need some daylight

You need some daylight
You need some daylight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Peder's song "Daylight" convey a sense of urban isolation and the effect it can have on a person's mental state. The first few lines are a commentary on the homogenization of city life, where everyone is walking down the same "dead end street" and searching for meaning or direction in a place "where the sun never shines." The singer of the song is watching someone they care about slowly slip away, losing themselves in the maze of the city. The chorus serves as a plea for this person to seek out the light and positivity that they need to break free from the darkness that surrounds them. The repeated line "you need some sunshine, you need some daylight" is a reminder that sometimes the simplest pleasures can make the biggest difference.

The second verse continues this theme of struggling in an urban environment. The shade of the trees used to bring peace, but now they are a reminder of what has been lost. The singer is saddened by the fact that the person they love is losing themselves, unable to find their way in this environment that is slowly wearing them down. The final lines of the song are a call to action, begging this person to turn around and leave this place that is dragging them down. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the urgency of this plea, driving home the idea that this person needs to find their way out of the darkness and back into the light.

my take is that he is grieving the past, a memory, a woman? and he is using this lady to remember even for a few minutes what it was like in the past. but soon he realizes that it is not real and he falls back into sadness. That is why the songs goes "you need to turn around and leave this place" he is stuck in the past and "he needs some sunshine"
