Me dicen en la escuela y me preguntan en mi casa
Y hasta ahora lo supe de repente cuando
Oí pasar la lista y ella no estuvo presente
La de la mochila azul, la de ojitos dormilones
Me dejo gran inquietud y bajas calificaciones
Ni al recreo quiero salir no me divierto con nada
No puedo leer no escribir
De recuerdo me quedan sus colores
Las hojas del cuaderno
Dice amores de borrones
Yo quisiera mirarla en su pupitre
Porque si ella ya no vuelve mi salón sera muy triste
La de la mochila azul, la de ojitos dormilones
Me dejo gran inquietud y bajas calificaciones
Al recreo quiero salir no me divierto con nada
No puedo leer no escribir
Me hace falta su mirada
The lyrics to Pedro Fernandez's song La de la mochila azul (The girl with the blue backpack) are about a young boy who is deeply affected by the absence of a girl he likes. The opening lines, "Que te pasa chiquillo que te pasa" (What's wrong with you little boy, what's wrong?), set the tone for the song as he describes his feelings of despair and confusion about where the girl could be. He becomes aware of her absence when her name is not on the attendance list at school.
The boy is in love with the girl and her absence affects him so much that he can't concentrate in class, resulting in poor grades. The girl with her blue backpack and sleepy eyes has left him with a great uneasiness, which affects his whole being. He doesn't want to go to recess anymore because he can't enjoy anything without her. The girl's presence gave him the confidence to read and write, and now that she's gone, his mind is clouded. He longs for her and her gaze and says, "Me hace falta su mirada" ("I miss her gaze").
As the song progresses, he remembers the moments they spent together, the colors of her backpack, and the scribbles of love on her notebook. He wishes he could see her again, in her usual spot at school, "Porque si ella ya no vuelve mi salón sera muy triste" ("Because if she doesn't come back, my classroom will be very sad").
