Just One Way To Say I Love You
Peggy Lee Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why search for flowery phrases
Quoting what poets have said
Why talk in circles around it
Why not be simple instead
Let's hit the nail on the head

I love you, I love you
There's no other way
Just one way to say
I love you

I love you, I love you
And try as I may
That's all I can say
I love you

Much more could be said if I thought with my head
But I only can think with my heart

I love you, I love you
And yearn for the day
The day when you'll say
"I love you"

I could be oh, so indiff'rent
With very little success
I could continue pretending
But I'm afraid you would guess
So why not simply say, "Yes"?

I love you, I love you
There's no other way
Just one way to say
I love you

I love you, I love you
And try as I may
That's all I can say
I love you

Much more could be said if I thought with my head
But I only can think with my heart

I love you, I love you
And this is the day
The day when we'll say
"I love you"

Overall Meaning

The song "Just One Way to Say I Love You" by Peggy Lee is a simple and direct expression of love. It argues that all the flowery language and poetic devices are not necessary when it comes to love. The singer suggests that the most effective way to express love is to speak from the heart and say "I love you" directly.

The song's simplicity and directness make it a beautiful and powerful expression of love. The lyrics emphasize the importance of sincerity and honesty in expressing affection. By letting ourselves be vulnerable and speaking honestly about our feelings, we can create deep connections with the people we love.

The song acknowledges that there may be more that could be said about love, but that ultimately, the heart speaks louder than the head. Rather than getting lost in analysis or trying to impress with words, the singer encourages us to speak plainly and from the heart.

PEGGY LEE – (Just One Way to Say) I Love You
Another song that would have fit right into an “I love you” segment of one of the 500+ Nancy for Frank 3-hour shows, is playing right now on Siriusly Sinatra. Perhaps the simplest lyric Irving Berlin ever composed – but, as always – to a perfectly memorable tune. The orchestration is light yet lush – like a breath of fresh Spring air.

My 'all-time favorite' female singer with the Nelson Riddle orchestra “conducted by Frank Sinatra.” Didn't Frank record this one early in his career with Alex Stordahl? (Or am I misrememb'ring – again?)

Much more could be said, if I thought with my head
But I only can think with my heart.
I love you, I love you, and yearn for the day
The day when YOU'll say, "I love you."
