My Heart Belongs To Daddy
Peggy Lee Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to fall in love with all those boys who maul the young cuties
But now I find I'm more inclined to keep my mind on my duties.

While tearing off a game of golf
I may make a play for the caddy
But when I do, I don't follow through
'cause my heart belongs to Daddy.
If I invite a boy some night
To dine on my fine finnan haddie
I just adore his asking for more
But my heart belongs to Daddy

Yes my heart belongs to Daddy
So I simply couldn't be bad
Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy
Da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da
So I want to warn you, laddie
Though I know you're perfectly swell
But my heart belongs to Daddy
'Cause my Daddy he treats it so well

There was a dame that a football game
Made long for the strong undergraddie
I never dream of making the team
'Cause my heart belongs to daddy

Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy
So I simply couldn't be bad
Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy
Da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da
So I want to warn you, laddie
Though I know you're perfectly swell

That my heart belongs to Daddy
'Cause my Daddy, he treats it so well

Overall Meaning

The song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" by Peggy Lee is a lighthearted tune about a woman's loyalty to her father. In the first verse, Lee talks about how she used to fall in love with boys who were interested in her, but now she prefers to focus on her responsibilities. She compares her lack of interest in romantic partners to her budding interest in golf, where she might make a playful move on her caddy but ultimately stays true to her father.

In the second verse, Lee discusses how she might entertain a man at dinner, but ultimately she is devoted to her father. She warns any potential suitors that they will never be able to sway her affections from her dad, who treats her well. The use of the word "daddy" instead of "father" is a playful and flirtatious nod to the song's underlying theme.

Overall, the song is a humorous take on loyalties and reveals a woman's adoration for her father. The lyrics, paired with Lee's sultry voice and the upbeat tempo, make for a playful and entertaining tune.

This is flawless.  Once again Peggy hits it out of the park.

For the "older" generations, this song will be most closely associated with Mary Martin, for the "younger" ones, it'll be an other MM, Marilyn Monroe. There are other notoriously sexy songstresses, most notably Eartha Kitt and Julie London. In no sense I want to belittle these versions, all good ones in their own right, and I have them all on records and albums, but Peggy Lee really hits it out of the ballpark, as Paul stated. You don't get any jazzier and sexier than this. The album cover ain't too shabby either ;-). P.S. The rendition of Anita O'Day is equally good, a display of her unmatched improvisational skills, but as far as straight, unadulterated swing goes, Peggy's is the definitive one.

James Gavin who wrote an excellent biography of Peggy Lee said her jazz phrasing on this blows his mind. He's so right.
