Sugar
Peggy Lee Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He needs me,
He doesn't know it but he needs me!
And so, no matter where he goes,
Though he doesn't care,
He knows I'm there.

He needs me,
I ought to leave him but he needs me!
I know that I ain't very bright
Just to tag along,
Oh, but right or wrong,
I'm his, and I'm here.

And I'm gonna be his friend or lover,
'Cause my one ambition is
To wake him and may, hey hey hey, he'll discover
That he needs me!
I've got to follow where he leads me,

Or else he'll never know that I need him,
Just as he needs me!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Peggy Lee's song "Sugar" are about a woman who is helplessly in love with a man who doesn't love her back. The woman feels that the man needs her even though he doesn't realize it yet. She is willing to follow him anywhere he goes and be his friend or lover, just to be close to him. She acknowledges that she's not very bright for being so devoted to him, but she can't help herself. Her one ambition is to wake him up and make him realize that they need each other.

The song is a sad commentary on unrequited love and the lengths people will go to be near their object of affection. It speaks to the idea that sometimes love is not rational, and people will put themselves through pain and heartache just to be near the person they love. The woman in the song is not blinded by the fact that the man doesn't love her back, but she feels that she can't help herself, and she's willing to do anything for him.

Overall, Peggy Lee's "Sugar" is a melancholy yet beautiful song that captures the heartache and devotion of unrequited love. It is a timeless classic that still resonates with music fans today.

Fabulous. Thanks. Unfortunately before my time, I wish I could have experienced this music live.  The music seems more refined back then.

It doesn't get much better than this. Great film too. Didn't notice it before (until this clip actually), but I think B Holliday had a big influence on her. It is just my opinion. I am not saying one is better... I know what jazz fans are like.. Great vid. Thanks for posting it.

@SoulSir

Peggy sounds, wonderful in this clip. Thanks, "TheJazzStreet".

@schlettstadt

Lady was a class act -- and smooth a sugar herself!

@DeeTrumpet

Interesting! I should have thought of looking up the film, which I see now was directed by Jack Webb, who also played the title role of Pete Kelly. Still, I can't help but wonder whether he was doing his own playing on this track. The Wiki article on the film names the band members who provided the music, including Dick Cathcart on trumpet. Still, it's a wonderful video, and I can't wait to see the entire film. Thanks to The Jazz Street for posting it!
