Penguin Prison Lyrics

Underneath these cold excuses and old mistakes
All your closest friends have fallen away
And relieved you from what you hated before they came
We've had all we could take
I don't think you're the greatest
And you've tried so hard to escape
('Cause even if you never show it)
You know it's showing when your nose is growing
(And even if you try to change it)
You make the same thing when you rearrange it
(And even if you're only dreaming)
I never seen you waking up between them
(And even for a single moment)
So don't you worry, go on back to snorin'
La da Da da Da Dat dum
All my bones have told me what you would say
Like a dream that's open, you see right above your bed
Hope your wants and needs are calling to shape
And believe this feeling, the shame right upon your face
We've had all we could take
I don't think you're the greatest
And you've tried so hard to escape
What you never created
('Cause even if you never show it)
You know it's showing when your nose is growing
(And even if you try to change it)
You make the same thing when you rearrange it
(And even if you're only dreaming)
I never seen you waking up between them
(And even for a single moment)
So don't you worry, go on back to snorin'
La da Da da Da Dat dum
Help me; I knew we've had all we could take
Underneath two swollen faces about the same
I wish I'd been all around the world
And seen all the places you've been to
How far you've come from a lonely birth
When you return I'll know it's you
('Cause even if you never show it)
You know you show it when your nose is growing
(And even if you try to change it)
You make the same thing when you rearrange it
(And even if you're only dreaming)
I never seen you waking up between them
(And even for a single moment)
So don't you worry, go on back to snorin'
La da Da da Da Dat dum
We've had all we could take
We've had all we could take/(And even if you're only dreaming)
And so it comes from a lonely world that's chanting
(We've had all we could take)
I know it's not, but I still can hear its tune
(We've had all we could take)/(Even if you try to change it)
The only things that I remember happening
(We've had all we could take)/(Even for a single moment)
The only things I can't believe were true
Can't believe were true
We've had all we could take
In Penguin Prison's song "Pinocchio," the lyrics address the idea of someone who is living a lie and is seeking escape from the life they've built for themselves. The first verse sets up the theme by saying that the person has reached their breaking point and is trying to escape their mistakes and old habits. The second verse suggests that the singer has picked up on a sense of shame that they carry around like a weight. The chorus zeros in on the idea of the Pinocchio metaphor: even if the lies this person is telling themselves are hidden, they always seem to reveal themselves just like Pinocchio's growing nose.
The bridge of the song offers a glimmer of hope, suggesting that the singer has the ability to come back to reality and to something real. The song ends on the line "we've had all we could take," emphasizing that the singer has reached their breaking point and will no longer tolerate a life built on falsehoods.
