Necropolis
Penitent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Many have walked upon this path before me.
Many have been tricked, but I was not.
Here many spirits are haunting me.
I feel the untouchable fear.
It is empty but my eyes still see,
although they are covered by tears.

I still hear the screams of sorrow.
This is the beauty that fills my soul.
In our hands we carry the ancient flame.
The most powerful weapon of all times it is.
We walk in the footsteps of our ancestors.
They who once proudly came here to die.

We are at the same place, but yet another age.
Certain things will always remain the same.
We are now falling into other souls.
They are so many but yet alone.
Everything we pass are scary piles of pain.
That who has been will be burned into our brains.
Unbreakable are the chains of our memories.

Never will I be the one who denies to see.
Still I am able to touch the fear.
Screaming are the thoughts who call upon my soul.
Love is not all and will not come to you here.
Here the silent sorrow tells the whole story.

Now I can see that very spot to myself.
Nothing about this sacred place have I forgotten.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Penitent's song Necropolis speak about a journey taken by the singer that many others have taken before them. They are aware of the tricks and illusions that lie in their path and have not fallen prey to them. As they journey, they find themselves haunted by the spirits of those who have gone before them and are filled with an untouchable sense of fear. They see the emptiness around them, yet their eyes still see through the tears they shed. The singer hears the screams of those who have suffered and finds a sense of beauty in that sorrow, as they carry the ancient flame of knowledge and tradition that has been passed down by their ancestors. They know that this flame is the most powerful weapon of all time, and that they walk in the footsteps of their forefathers, who also came to this place to die with dignity.

The lyrics suggest that they are in a place where everything they pass is a "scary pile of pain". The chains of memories that are etched into their brains are unbreakable, and they cannot deny what they see or touch. Their thoughts are screaming out to them, but they continue on with their journey, knowing that love will not come to them here. They understand that this is a place of silent sorrow where the past and the present come together. The singer finds solace in the fact that they have not forgotten anything about this sacred place and that they can see that spot to themself.

Overall, Necropolis's lyrics are powerful and haunting, speaking about the journey one must take to understand and respect the past, to carry that knowledge forward and to honour those who came before us.
