Mary Did You Know?
Pentatonix Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Mary did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you
Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Mary did you know?
Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Mary did you know?
The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect lamb?
That sleeping child you're holding is the great I am
Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Mary did you know?
Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Mary did you know? Oh
Mary did you know?
The lyrics of the song "Mary Did You Know?" by Pentatonix beautifully narrate the story of Jesus Christ's arrival on earth and his purpose. The song is addressed to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and is a reflection of her thoughts and emotions towards her child as she nurtures him. The song asks Mary some profound questions about the incredible abilities and powers of Jesus that she might not have known.
Throughout the lyrics, the song presents a series of miraculous events that Jesus was said to have performed through his lifetime. The lines "Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water?" and "Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?" are examples of the wonders that Jesus performed, and thus suggests that Mary did not fully comprehend how special her child was. Similarly, the line "When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God" suggests Mary's underlying realization that her child was not just a regular child, but the son of God.
The song concludes by affirming the greatness of Jesus as Lord of all creation and the perfect lamb of heaven. The lyrics portray Mary’s amazement and awe as she discovers the true nature of her son and his ultimate purpose to save mankind.
