Say Something
Pentatonix Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Say something I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me too
Anywhere I would have followed you
Say something I'm giving up on you

And I am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all

And I will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

Say something I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you oh
Anywhere I would have followed you
Say something I'm giving up on you

And I, will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye

Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something
Say something
Say something

I'll be the one if you want me too
Say something
Say something

Say something I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one if you want me too
Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one if you want me too

Say, say something I'm giving up on you (I'm giving up on you)
Oh whoa
I'll be the one if you want me too
Oh ah

Say something I'm giving up on you
Say something I'm giving up oh whoa
I'll be the one if you want me too
If you want me too ah, if you want me too
Anywhere I would have followed you oh whoa
Say something
Say something
Say something
Say something
Say something
Say something

Aa huu

Say something I'm giving up on you
Oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Say Something" by Pentatonix are a hauntingly beautiful plea from a lover who feels lost and helpless in their relationship. The singer has reached their breaking point and is giving up on trying to fix things. They are asking their partner to say something, anything, to show that they still care and are willing to fight for the relationship. The repetition of the phrase "Say something" throughout the song emphasizes the singer's desperation and need for communication.

The opening lines, "Say something, I'm giving up on you. I'll be the one, if you want me to," suggest that the singer is willing to do anything to save the relationship, even if it means sacrificing their own needs and desires. They have been following their partner's lead, but now realize they must take charge if they want things to change. The lines "Anywhere, I would have followed you" highlight their devotion and willingness to go to great lengths to be with their loved one.

As the song progresses, the singer confesses their vulnerability and admits to knowing very little about love. They stumble and fall as they try to navigate their feelings and figure out the best course of action. The lines "I'm still learning to love, Just starting to crawl" showcase their uncertainty and inexperience.

The chorus is a heartbreaking declaration of defeat, as the singer apologizes for not being able to reach their partner and announces that they are giving up. The lines "I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you, Say something I'm giving up on you" suggest a deep sense of regret and resignation.

Overall, "Say Something" is a poignant reminder of the importance of communication in relationships and how easy it is to drift apart when we don't make an effort to connect with our loved ones.

To this day I’m GRATEFUL that they gave Kirstin the lead of this song. The smartest choice ever, her voice sounds so innocent but also cuts through so perfectly, it hits you in the feels.
