We Three Kings
Pentatonix Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
We three kings, we three kings

Born a king on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign

Oh, star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light
We three kings, we three kings

Myrrh is mine, it's bitter perfume
Breaths a life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding dying
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb

Oh, star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light
We three kings, we three kings

We three kings, we three kings
We three kings, we three kings

We three kings, we three kings
We three kings, we three kings

Overall Meaning

The Christmas Carol "We Three Kings" by John Henry Hopkins Jr. tells the story of the journey of the wise men or magi towards the location of the newborn baby Jesus, as evoked by the Star of Bethlehem that leads them to the place of his birth. The song's opening lines, "We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar," suggests that the magi originated from the East – an educated guess as it is not mentioned in the Bible. The relevance of the number three or the significance of the gift offerings, which are gold, frankincense, and myrrh, on the other hand, describes their individual and respectful representation to the different aspects of Jesus’ character and his future role as a savior.

The first verse implies the tremendous efforts of the Magi to find the newborn. A daunting journey that even took them to the unknown dark corners of the earth into "fields," "fountains," "moors," and "mountains." The line "following yonder star" falls into their collective belief that the appearance of the Star is a beacon of hope and significance that would lead them to the new king, who they wanted to worship.

The verse "Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume breaths a life of gathering gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb" in the second verse hints the tragedy and suffering Jesus would face in his life. The song reminds us that Jesus' life played a significant role, leading to His death and resurrection, which is why it is bittersweet to gift the newborn King with both the symbolic frankincense associated with priesthood and gold that represents kingship.

This is my favorite Christmas song and it's so rarely covered. I'm so glad Pentatonix have a version, and of course it's hidden xD

Rocket Kid

I can't have Christmas without this version and the 1st Christmas EP playing all December!

Well at least you can hear 👂 them

The TechMan E.

But still, out of the whole comments I've read, Pentatonix has improved and matured their voices. They sound awesome!! It's others peoples opinions, but they added effects to their songs but I can say that even without the effects, they sound the exact same way when they perform live. They are an awesome group.

@Eric Ver Linden They do, every artist does, it doesn’t mean they’re bad or that they can’t replicate it very similarly live. They just add effects to make it more pleasant to the ear.

Eric Ver Linden

They don't add any effects to any of their songs 🤦‍♂️

This is the whole group. It's just more clearer on here than the show. It's all 5, I believe they are all singing harmony, then Scott sang over everything. It also is acapella, they are just that great of a group that they can do it. Avi and Kevin are truly amazing, the sounds that they make are incredible! When doing a recording, everything is mastered and crisp. It's completely different than doing it live. Here they get to record and re-record it until they have it perfect. That's wh

I'd love to hear you do "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and "Blue Christmas."  With your arrangement brilliance, you guys should be able to do some serious genre-hopping with older songs and not have to compete with the original artists on the charts.

Erica McIver

They did a cover of Rocking Around The Christmas Tree. I believe, last year.
