Why You Gotta Be Like That
Pepper Coyote Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything I've said up to this point you can ignore
Everything I've done you can forget
I just realized that I'm talking to an idiot
Yeah my quota has been filled, okay, I'm set

Put yourself where I am
Take a peek inside
I don't do things just to mess with you
You aren't even on my radar and hey
I'm not inconsiderate
Believe me, yeah, I care
I just, I, hey can, slow down would you let me get a word in, oh

Why you gotta be like that?
I try to do what you want me to but
It never seems quite enough, oh
Why you gotta be like that
And think I might not be like that too

Spending every hour I can stand to sit alone
Spending every ounce of patience on
The kind of stuff a kindergarten teacher would roll her eyes at
How about you take a look at what I actually said

Put yourself where I am
Do you have a clue?
What a wasted piece of energy it would be to deal with you
But let me type up my rebuttal
See if I can help you out
I just, ugh, here ya go, here's something else to "subtweet", oh

(Why)
Why you gotta be like that? (Be like that)
I try to do what you want me to but, it never seems quite enough, oh
(Why?)
Why you gotta be like that? (Be like that)
And think I might not be like that too
Come on!

Why, why you gotta be like that? (Be like that)
I try to do what you want me to, but it never seems quite enough, oh
(Why?)
Why you gotta be like that? (Be like that)
And think I might not be like that too
Come on now, Why?

Why you gotta be like that? (Be like that)
I try to do what you want me to, but it never seems quite enough, oh
(Why?)
Why you gotta be like that? (Be like that)
And think I might not be like that too

Oh oh oh oh

(Why?)
I've got no money
Wrong kind of fame (be like that)
I'm running up my credit card
(?)
Come on, yeah (why?)

(Scats)
The Wu Tang Clan ain't nothin (end)

Overall Meaning

In Pepper Coyote's song "Why You Gotta Be Like That," the singer expresses his frustration with someone who is constantly misunderstanding him or misinterpreting his actions. The opening lines suggest that he's talking to someone who isn't worth his time, someone who is acting like an idiot. He reassures the person that he's not trying to mess with them but struggles to get a word in edgewise as they talk over him. The chorus of the song asks the person why they have to act that way and insinuates that the singer may be guilty of the same kind of behavior sometimes.

The bridge of the song finds the singer exasperated, spending all of his time trying to deal with this person, using up all of his patience, and even feeling like he's regressing back to kindergarten. He's frustrated that this person doesn't seem to understand what he's saying, and he wishes they would just listen to his perspective. The final chorus repeats the message that the singer is trying to please this person, even though it feels like nothing he does is enough, and asks the person again why they have to act this way.
