Rose Mary Stretch
Pepper Rabbit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh no the kitchen is closed
If I feel it coming round I'll see it go
Oh stop worrying about it
The mortgage is paid
Yeah the money's well spent

And I will watch you
Go down to the dark place of the party
And stop there watch out
For your face to perspire

Go on telling me
That I don't need a job
Or a college degree
Throw up your caps and your gowns
Your shit out of luck
Your never leaving this town

Hang on to your family tree
They've given you everything you'll ever need
Don't take care and don't even write
You'll never see my face again after tonight

And I will watch you
Go down to the dark place of the party
And stop there watch out
For your face to perspire

And take everything that
I ever lent to your closet

I burned all your hangings around
And threw out the locket

Overall Meaning

Pepper Rabbit's song "Rose Mary Stretch" seems to be about a relationship that has come to an end. The first stanza mentions the closure of a kitchen, which could be read as the end of the nourishment the relationship provided. The singer then says if they feel the relationship returning, they'll let it go, suggesting they don't want to rekindle the romance. The next line of this stanza, "Oh stop worrying about it," could be directed towards the ex-partner, who might still be invested in the relationship.

The second stanza seems to be a conversation directed at the ex-partner. The singer tells them not to worry about them, as the mortgage is paid and the money is well spent. The ex is said to be going to "the dark place of the party," which could signify they're moving on and having a good time, but the singer notes they should watch out for their face to perspire, indicating they might be struggling or not as happy as they seem.

The third stanza could be taken as the singer telling the ex not to give up on their dreams and ambitions, urging them to not throw away their cap and gown or family history. It's unclear if the singer is also talking about themselves, but they suggest the ex has everything they need to succeed. The final line of this stanza, "you'll never see my face again after tonight," reinforces the idea that the relationship has ended and the singer is moving on.

The final stanza seems to be the singer's rejection of the ex-partner. They say to take everything that they've lent them and to never write to them again. They've burned the hangings around (perhaps meaning old photos or keepsakes) and thrown out a locket, implying that they're done with the memories and mementos of the relationship.

These guys were a part of my formative years, so it's a little sad to see they don't have much of a following to this day. Great song for getting into the band!

I first heard this on Trendland and I fell in love! this song is so spiritually invoking. it's awesome!

This is such a great song. I think about it random years later. Sounds like it should be in an Apple ad.

The lyrics are great. I told my parents I dropped out of college after hearing this song.

"Rose Mary Stretch" reminds me of backyard parties in La Mesa, CA where they serve Kool-Aid and burgers on paper plates under corrugated green plastic awnings and everyone is feeling real, real nice. There's an art to that.

@silverstatic Do you mean that you don't like the new material or that they'll stop releasing music? Both of their albums are 5/5 records in my opinion! Could become one of my absolute favourite groups if they continue making music like this!
