i fucking LOVE the choices you make of clips to show when dirk goes off on rants? they are always SO perfect to the subject at hand even if there's only a tangential relationship. i know everyone has already mentioned how much they lost their shit over the soup, but i'm also thinking of the stuff from previous chapters like the video tape...

also, thank you SO FUCKING MUCH for translating the titles from Russian like that? It made that whole exchange so much more meaningful and immediate! i kinda used to just skip over that bit with my eyes glazed over, but now it actually makes SENSE.

and JESUS CHRIST ALL THE FUCKING HORSE MOVIE CLIPS? BRILLIANT. INSPIRED. INCREDIBLE. AMAZING. I RECOGNIZED LIKE 90% OF THOSE BECAUSE I WAS THE HORSE GIRL IN THIRD GRADE. I WAS A MEMBER OF THE PONY PALS CLUB, I HAVE THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THIS BOOK ALMOST FUCKING MEMORIZED??? AND LIKE. THOSE HORSE MOVIES. HOLY SHIT.

what i'm saying is this is an absolutely fucking INSPIRED piece of fanwork, and with every new chapter i am blown away even more.

Anna stewing in her own charisma, drinking spirits, and staring out the window thinking about death gave me real strong Mom Lalonde vibes.

God*damn* what an excellent chapter. Acorn and Minos's mindgames have this excellent dick-measuring quality to them for the entire spiel, but this part has always been my favourite. Up until this point in the story, Acorn has maintained an aloofness towards Anna, but once he makes this deal that illusion starts to slip away and more and more of their love is apparent. The growing distance between Anna and the mortal characters started at her death, but here we have Pam and Pawnee having another aside and then the next morning Anna going out by herself. She's no longer just one of the Pony Pals, but their leader. (Side note, is that a Vriska cosplayer's arm?) I love the silhouetting of Anna to thematically tie her musings over life and death to Acorn and Minos's dialogues the night before.
The no cat-- paragraph nearly moves me to tears of laughter every time, I have no idea why. I think it's the "Also the cat's still fucking missing" that tips me over the edge, the disruption of Betancourt's writing maintained and then that just tacked onto the end. (I wonder if Betancourt has read this. The amazon page for this book has been thoroughly Homestucked, so it's not ridiculous to think she might have found the reference. God, I hope so. If you're here, Jeanne, hello!)
The irony rant is actually as precious to me as the Longcat one, if only because there's nothing quite this revealing about Dirk's take on the interplay of allowable passion within dismissable irony within Homestuck, and yet all the hints are there to make this just an excellent examination of his character and his relationship to self expression. It goes back to Dave, really, if we ever left him. Dirk's mimetic worship of Dave leaves him subject to the same social booby traps that his guardian (ironically) avoided through his dedication to ... the meme. I'm tempted, I really am, to ramble about irony for however many words this YouTube comment box will allow me to, but I'll leave that to the professionals. Not to flex, but I sincerely enjoy this, as evidenced by the time I invest in it.
I can't believe it took me until this beautiful montage of majestic horses to realise that Dirk's love of horses/ponies was not just a hilarious brony joke, but also one of the many ways he maintains a connection to the south of a sunken America, the proverbial lone cowboy who wishes he knew how to quit his love and occasionally drops a 'g' or says 'ain't' to lighten up his uptight dialogue, already burdened by the replication of a meandering humour that can't quite be copied with this much carefulness. The longer this series goes on, the more Dirkensian my prose becomes. It's contagious! Run while you can.
I loved this chapter so much and am so excited for the upcoming walk!

Laurasauras Thank you for this lovely, thoughtful comment! I always look forward to your reaction!!

i love the way the screen freezes when dirk's monologues go past what the scene could reasonably accommodate.

bees ???

I absolutely lost my shit at the soup I can’t lie

I just understood what that cutaway was meant to be by reading your comment. Because apparently with it being preceded by Dirk saying soup, and ended with him saying it again, I still didn't get it.

Fridge

each and every episode of this series fills me with a kind of delight that is unlike any other. It's the bubbling, wretched glee I felt when first reading the most genius parts of homestuck, and I cannot seem to find it anywhere else. It is for recreating this inexplicable joy that I thank you, and also these videos deserve way more fucking attention holy shit they are masterpieces, each and every one, god damn.

The Dostoevsky books in a pile on the ground were an excellent touch.

This has the feel of an abridged series if the point was changed entirely due to a long-running joke
