Because Of You
Percy Faith & His Orchestra/Tony Bennett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Because of you there's a song in my heart
Because of you my romance had its start
Because of you the sun will shine
The moon and stars will say you're mine
Forever and never to part

I only live for your love and your kiss
It's paradise to be near you like this
Because of you my life is now worth while
And I can smile
Because of you

I only live for your love and your kiss
It's paradise to be near you like this
Because of you my life is now worth while

And I can smile
Because of you

Overall Meaning

The song Because of You by Percy Faith & His Orchestra/Tony Bennett is a classic love ballad that is still popular today. The lyrics express how the singer's life has changed for the better ever since they met the person they love. The first verse makes it clear that the singer's heart is full of joy and music because of their love. The second verse reveals that the singer's life was incomplete until they met their lover, and they now feel complete and content.

The chorus repeats the same sentiments, emphasizing that the singer's life is worth living because of their lover. The last line, "And I can smile because of you," is particularly moving, as it suggests that the singer's life was once unhappy and that their lover has brought them happiness and joy. I think it was in the mid-80s when I met Tony. His career was asleep and had not yet been revived by his MTV appearances.

I had been a fan since 1951 when I was a senior in in High School. I was the only kid my age in the neighborhood who had his own car (1937 Ford twodoor no heater floor shift - but I'd installed a radio). My buddies and I (when you have the only car in the hood you are very popular) would cruise around Jersey City and Hoboken on summer nights windows down singing that song at the top of ou lungs - until I met a girl.

Still cruised still singing but just her and me looking for places to park and make out.

So when Tony came to Chicago in the whatevers he was touring a new CD (How Do You Stop The Music)  and hustling it at Rose Records on Rush Street. I was shocked that there was not a line around the block. Nope. It was just a folding table with a stack of CDs and Toney sitting there talking with some assistant.

No fans. Just me.

So I was able to talk with him. I told him about that summer of 1951 how he had made it so happy and filled with song. He signed the CD with a gold pen.

Love that man. Love his music. Love his whole story.
