Why didn't somebody tell me about this earlier? I've gained even more respect for Grainger now. While geniuses like Cage rejected the Theremin, Grainger saw potential in this instrument....

Percy Grainger wrote two Free Music pieces Free Music-1 for 4 Theremins and Free Music-2 for 6 oscillators. Free Music-1 was performed at the time on Theremins , also in 1976 on the EMS Synthi 100 and in 2011 Free Music-1 was performed on 4 iphone Theremins. In 2016 both FM-1 amd FM-2 were performed on the restored EMS Synthi 100 at the MRC (Melbourne Recital Centre) Les Craythorn.

The theremin is a supremely cool instrument.

Had no idea that Percy was dabbling in 'electronic music' and predates Stockhausen!!

Does anyone know how much "Free Music" Percy Grainger wrote, and where it can be found, either recordings or scores?

Another version of this (performed on a custom-made music box incorporating specially-tuned reeds and hand-cut paper rolls) is on Artefacts Of Australian Experimental Music. Other than that, it seems that only interpretations exist, most likely due to technology being far behind Grainger's ideas at the time.

you can go and see it at Melb Uni if you're in Aus :O :O

I would love to tour the Grainger Museum, what a fantastic place!  And only 10,000 miles away... :-(

I think there is a whole long documentary about Grainger's "Free Music" somewhere on YouTube. His work in this field was rather extensive.
