INSOMNIA
Periphery (Distort Songs) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Though you can give no more inspiring false courage
I've got the reason to alter belief
Selfish paintings diamonds mutilate
You can't erase the way I'm unappreciated

But I can't sleep tonight
Embrace of the drink
Be hollow, swallow the pain
Splitting the fields
All the noise agitates

The stars have not aligned in your favor
Cross the line of obscenity

Ignoring the signs
The smoke in your eyes
Carelessly

Of the edge with me
It will paint your child white

Look to find a way, to love all the past promises, to keep you washed away.

Sever the ties
Broken by the black and white
Now fade away

The stars have not aligned in your favor
Cross the line of obscenity

Ignoring the signs
The smoke in your eyes
Carelessly

Of the edge with me
It will paint your child white

Look to find a way, to love all the past promises, to keep you washed away.

(Beyond my)

Laid in the ground
Were lost far beyond the clouds
Stay in the darks of hell, it's me.

Along the edge of belief
A heart always in the stars will never fade

Decay in the ground
Were lost far beyond the clouds
Pray in the dark for now
Prey on the sounds

With silence the darks around
Reach for a spark of doubt alive

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Insomnia" by Periphery (Distort Songs) are quite perplexing and can be interpreted in various ways. The song appears to be about a person struggling with insomnia due to inner conflicts and external factors that are agitating them. The opening verse "Though you can give no more inspiring false courage, I've got the reason to alter belief, Selfish paintings diamonds mutilate, You can't erase the way I'm unappreciated" seems to be addressing someone who has failed to encourage the singer or inspire them to keep fighting. In fact, selfishness and materialism have been inflicted on the singer, making them feel unappreciated.

The chorus "But I can't sleep tonight, Embrace of the drink, Be hollow, swallow the pain, Splitting the fields, All the noise agitates" shows that the singer is struggling to fall asleep despite seeking solace in alcohol. The pain seems to be too much to handle, and the noise around them is causing more trouble. The next verse "The stars have not aligned in your favor, Cross the line of obscenity, Ignoring the signs, The smoke in your eyes, Carelessly" could be interpreted as someone speaking to the singer, stating that things are not going well enough for them. It is beyond their control and they should be careful as they might end up doing something that they would regret later.

Some of the potential themes that this song explores include insomnia, feelings of being unappreciated, struggles with alcohol, and inner conflicts. All of these themes are presented in a poetic and cryptic way, which allows for multiple interpretations.

The first i listened to this i was 16, today im 26 and i can say this is still one of my top 5 favourite metal album of all time. If you wanna listed to something great check out Language from The Contortionist.

ThreeHeadedWalrus

The disagreeing chords and huge distortion is all part of this genre, it's meant to be really technical, so it's pretty damn genious. It takes reeeaaally precise timing. Personally, I love it! As for the screaming, cmon, it's metal XD

Jesse Buhagiar

This was the perfect song for Track 1 of the album; the intro absolutely melts your face off. Imagine not having heard of Bulb or Periphery and then hearing that.

G00N3YC4NG

@Joaquin Wohler Ferreyra exactly. Sent me down an entirely new path.

G00N3YC4NG

I had the privilege of doing exactly that back in 2012.

Yoko Ono

These guys are fulfilling that 'missing element' in today's music. All the rehashed chord progressions and patterns, rhythms, and conventional Rock memes are tossed out the window. Thank GOD for Meshuggah, and their offspring.

Toby KBTY

As much as I LOVE P2 and their other material (P3 is fucking stellar)...there's just something very special about this album despite it being a Bulb reel with Spencer growling over it. It still hits really hard. Maybe it was the impact it had at the time that still lasts. Still one of my favorite albums of all time.

Suda

I refused to like these guys for the longest time but damn they're sick.

Walter Oakfield

it was a love from the first sound... till the end of times

Tom Betty

Illiteracy.
