The band members actually started out as punks drawing some inspiration from Swedish folk music, but gradually the Oi! genre started having a greater influence on their development and around 1997/1998 Perkele became skinheads.
Despite their Swedish origin, perkele—the noun used for the band's name—is, in fact, a Finnish profanity. In a 2003 interview, lead vocalist and founding member Ron Halinoja cited his "roots in Finland" and the word's expressively vulgar nature as the main reasons behind choosing this for the band's name. Perkele claim to be strongly against all kinds of racism, nationalism, fascism, sexism, and homophobia as well as being opposed to hate, war, and environmental pollution. Despite this, in the past their appearance at traditionally left-wing events has caused controversy due to some of their songs featuring lyrical themes of Swedish and Finnish nationalist sentiments. Due to the background of their bassist Chris as an adoptee originally from Sri Lanka, the band have at one point experienced racist abuse from the audience at a concert in Belgium.

Perkele Lyrics

They want us to join in and believe in miracles
and commit suicide for they fucking lie
You can take your fucking god and shove him up your arse
Liar, Liar, Liar, Liar!
Liar, Liar, Liar, Liar!
Liar, Liar, Liar, Liar!
I will never join your sect and listen to your lies
Go on and kill yourself
And bring your God into your grave
Cause we don't need your lies about a paradise
I hope you'll find your paradise in a coffin full of worms
Liar, Liar, Liar, Liar!
Liar, Liar, Liar, Liar!
Liar, Liar, Liar, Liar!
Liar, Liar, Liar, Liar!
The lyrics to Perkele's song Liar are a direct attack on religion and the way it can manipulate people into believing lies and committing horrific acts such as suicide. The song expresses a strong anti-religious sentiment and speaks out against the pressure to conform and believe in something blindly. The repeated use of the word "liar" throughout the song is a powerful statement against the lies perpetuated by those who push their beliefs onto others.
The lines "take your fucking god and shove him up your arse" and "I hope you'll find your paradise in a coffin full of worms" are particularly provocative, emphasizing the rejection of religion and its teachings. These lyrics convey a sense of anger and frustration towards those who try to force their beliefs onto others and manipulate them into following a false ideology.
Overall, the song serves as a voice for those who resist the pressure to conform and think for themselves. It is a powerful message against the dangers of blindly accepting what others tell us to believe.
