French neo-soul chanteuse Perle Lama embraced the traditions of American R&B and Caribbean zouk to win critical and commercial success. Born January 20, 1984, in Fort-de-France, Martinique, Lama was just 14 years old when she claimed top honors in the JM Harmony Contest. The prize, a recording contract, yielded her 1999 debut LP, Challenger, with the single "Akwarel la Sé Taw" winning the Best Zouk category at the annual SACEM Awards. The 2001 follow-up, Perle Etc., expanded Lama's musical reach, channeling reggae influences to win two more SACEM prizes, including Best Female Singer. Lama nevertheless spent the next five years out of the spotlight, finally resurfacing in the autumn of 2006 with Mizikasoleil. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

ce tourment qui s'installe me fais peur
In Perle Lama's song FÔ KimbÉ, the lyrics depict a situation of someone experiencing a deep emotional pain that worries the songwriter. The opening line begins, "Il fait froid dans ton coeur" or "It's cold in your heart," emphasizing the severity of the pain this person is feeling. The songwriter expresses that the constant anticipation of the worst outcome is hurting them and they want to help without stepping out of place. They desire to find the right words to soothe this person and relieve their pain but understands that ultimately the answer is beyond their control.
Continuing on, Perle Lama encourages the individual to release their pain by telling someone about it, insisting "dit le pour atténuer ta faiblesse" or "say it to alleviate your weakness." She doesn't want to watch them suffer and won't let them fall too deep, as she states, "je n'resterais pas là à te regarder sombrer dans tout ça, à te regarder tomber aussi baaasss," meaning "I won't just stand there and watch you sink in all of this, watch you fall so low." The chorus, "OoOoOoO fo kimbé pa janmin ladjé," which translates to "You must hold on, never give up," reinforces her message of perseverance and hope as she concludes with the lines, "en tant qu'amis j't'aiderai à n'importe quel prix," meaning "as a friend, I'll help you at any cost."
