Strangers in the Night
Perrey & Kingsley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Strangers in the night,
Exchanging glances
Wandering the night,
What were the chances
We'd be sharing love
Before the night was through

Something in your eyes
Was so inviting
Something in your smile
Was so exciting
Something in my heart
Told me I must have you

Strangers in the night
Two lonely people
We were strangers in the night
Up to the moment
When we said our first hello
Little did we know
Love was just a glance away
A warm embracing dance away

And ever since that night
We've been together
Lovers at first sight
In love forever
It turned out so right

Strangers in the night
Two lonely people
We were strangers in the night
Up to the moment
When we said our first hello
Little did we know
Love was just a glance away

A warm embracing dance away
For strangers in the night.

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of Strangers in the Night, the two main characters (presumably strangers) are exchanging glances while wandering the night. They find each other charming and feel drawn towards one another. They both have a sense that they will be sharing love before the night is over. The character that is singing is describing how something in their lover's eyes and smile made them feel invited and excited. They felt in their heart that they must have this stranger.

In the second verse, they were still strangers until they said their first hello, unknowingly discovering that they were only a glance away from feeling warm and embraced in a dance. The song suggests that they fell in love with each other immediately and have remained lovers ever since. The song ends with the two strangers turned lovers dancing through the night.
