And I Love You So
Perry Como Lyrics

The people ask me how
How I've lived till now
I tell them I don't know
I guess they understand
How lonely life has been
But life began again
And yes, I know how lonely life can be
The shadows follow me 'n' the night won't set me free
But I don't let the evening get me down
Now that you're around me
And you love me, too
Your thoughts are just for me
You set my spirit free
I'm happy that you do
The book of life is brief
And once a page is read
All but life is dead
That is my belief
And yes, I know how lonely life can be
The shadows follow me and the night won't set me free
But I don't let the evening get me down
Now that you're around me
Perry Como's And I Love You So is an emotional ballad about love and the transformative effect it can have on one's life. The lyrics emphasize the pervasive loneliness of life before finding love, and the profound difference it can make when someone comes into your life and takes your hand. The verses deal with the melancholy of living without love and the transformative power of the experience of loving someone so deeply. The song is told from the perspective of someone who has finally found the love they have longed for and is so grateful for the change it has brought about in their life that they cannot express it properly.
The theme of loneliness is carried throughout the song, but it is not presented in a way that is deeply melancholic. Instead, it is presented in a way that is nonetheless honest and vulnerable. It is clear that the singer has experienced great personal loss and pain, yet they maintain a sense of hope and believe that life can change for the better, all with the help of someone who loves them. The line "I don't let the evening get me down / Now that you're around me" conveys the newfound happiness that the singer is experiencing with their newfound love.
