Bless This House

Make it safe by night and day
Bless these walls so firm and stout
Keeping want and trouble out
Bless the roof and chimneys tall
Let thy peace lie overall
Bless this door that it may prove
Ever open,
To joy and love
Bless these windows shining bright
Letting in God's Heavenly light
Bless the hearth, ablazing there
With smoke ascending like a prayer!
Bless the people here within
Keep them pure and free from sin
Bless us all that we may be
Fit O Lord to dwell with thee
Bless us all that one day we may dwell
O Lord! With Thee!
The song “Bless This House” by Perry Como is a prayerful hymn that seeks to consecrate every corner and crevice of a house to the glory of God. In the first verse, the singer calls upon the Lord to bless the house and make it safe both by night and by day. This line shows the singer’s faith in a God who is able to protect the house and its inhabitants at all times, and it expresses the deep-seated desire for security and stability that we all seek in our homes.
The second verse continues in the same spirit, asking for divine protection from want and trouble. The walls are described as “firm and stout”, implying that they are sturdy and able to keep out any external harm or danger. The prayer then moves to the roof and chimneys, with the singer asking for God’s peace to “lie overall”. This is a beautiful image of a tranquil and peaceful home, where even the roofs and chimneys exude an aura of calmness and stillness.
