I know what it means
To be lost in the dark!
I know what it means
To be tossed by the storm!
I have walked alone
And despair too heavy for tears,
But you caught my heart
And you taught my heart
To forget it's doubts and fear!
And now that I know
The joy of your love
My head is high, I can face the sky
And know that heaven is here below,
I know . . .
For you I could die,
For you I will live,
I know!
( I Know, I know, I know! )
Words and Music by Carl Stutz
And Edith Lindeman
Perry Como's "I Know" is a song about finding love and feeling lost no more. The song's lyrics describe how the singer has known sadness and despair, but he has been saved by the love of his partner. The verses paint a picture of being lost in the dark and being tossed by the storm, giving the impression of feeling trapped and helpless. However, a partner enters the singer's life, and they are able to help them find their way and leave the sadness behind.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "I know" multiple times, emphasizing the knowledge that the singer has gained through finding love. He talks about how he can now face the sky, knowing that heaven is here below. The singer then declares that he would die for their partner and live for them too, signifying that they have found true happiness and meaning in their life.
The song's lyrics were written by Carl Stutz and Edith Lindeman. Perry Como's version of the song was released in 1959 and was one of his biggest hits. The song's lasting popularity has seen it covered by multiple artists, including Elvis Presley and Bobby Vinton.
