If I had everything, I'd still be a slave to you
If I ruled the night, stars and moon so bright
Still, I'd turn for light to you
If the world to me bowed yet humbly, I'd flee to you
If my friends were a crowd, I'd turn in my need to you
If I ruled the earth, what would life be worth
If I ruled the night, stars and moon so bright
Still, I'd turn for light to you
If the world to me bowed yet humbly, I'd flee to you
If my friends were a crowd, I'd turn in my need to you
If I ruled the earth, what would life be worth
If I hadn't the right to you
Perry Como's "If" is a ballad that highlights the depth of love and devotion one person has for another. The lyrics suggest that no matter what material, social or personal achievements one might attain, they would still be incomplete without the presence of the one they love. The song's theme is romantic and selfless love, and it emphasizes that true happiness lies in being loved by someone special and the willingness to reciprocate that love.
The song uses the technique of the conditional tense; where the singer expresses a hypothetical situation and the consequences that would follow. The lyrics "If they made me king, I'd be but a slave to you, If I had everything, I'd still be a slave to you" shows that the singer is willing to relinquish all the material possessions in exchange for love. The presentation of the lyrics in the conditional tense emphasizes the depth of the singer's devotion and the power that the receiver has.
In the second stanza, the singer explains that even if they ruled the world, their life would still be incomplete without the one they love. The line "If my friends were a crowd, I'd turn in my need to you" shows that the singer is willing to sacrifice social life and accept their loved one's companionship regardless of their social status.
Overall, Perry Como's "If" communicates the message that true happiness and ultimate fulfillment are only found in genuine love, and love requires selflessness and devotion to the other person.
