If We Can't Be The Same Old Sweethearts We'll Just Be The Same Old Friends

If we can't be the same old sweethearts,
Then we'll just be the same old friends!
For I want someone like you
Just to tell my troubles to,
My happiness, on you,
For I've known you too long to forget you
And my old dream of love never ends!
Though I know you can't be mine,
We will meet from time to time
And we'll just be the same old friends!
For I've known you too long to forget you
And my old dream of love never ends!
Though I know you can't be mine,
We will meet from time to time
And we'll just be the same old friends!
The lyrics of Perry Como's song If We Can't Be The Same Old Sweethearts We'll Just Be The Same Old Friends speaks of a bittersweet longing for love and companionship. The singer acknowledges that even though they can't be sweethearts, they still want to be friends and share their troubles and happiness with each other. The song seems to suggest that even though the singer has feelings for the other person, they have come to terms with the fact that they may not be able to be together romantically. However, they still value the other person's presence in their life and want to maintain a friendship with them.
The phrase "same old sweethearts" and "same old friends" suggest a sense of familiarity and history between the two people. The lyrics convey a sense of nostalgia and longing for a romance that may have existed between them before, but it's now a distant memory. Despite this, the singer still values the other person's friendship and cherishes the moments they share together. Overall, the song is a poignant expression of unrequited love and the desire to maintain a meaningful connection with someone who holds a special place in one's heart.
