Prisoner Of Love
Perry Como Lyrics

Too weak to break the chains that bind me
I need no shackles to remind me
I'm just a prisoner of love
For one command I stand and wait now
From one who's master of my fate now
I can't escape for it's too late now
What's the good of my caring
If someone is sharing those arms with me?
Although she has another
I can't have another, for I'm not free
She's in my dreams, awake or sleeping
Upon my knees to her I'm creeping
My very life is in her keeping
I'm just a prisoner of love
What's the good of my caring
If someone is sharing those arms with me?
Although she has another
I can't have another, for I'm not free
She's in my dreams, awake or sleeping
Upon my knees to her I'm creeping
My very life is in her keeping
I'm just a prisoner of love
The lyrics of Perry Como's song "Prisoner of Love" speak to the experience of being trapped in a love that cannot be fully realized. The singer of the song is "alone from night to night," feeling "weak" and unable to "break the chains that bind" him. He is trapped because he is in love with someone who cannot be with him, and he cannot escape his feelings. He feels like a "prisoner of love" who is waiting for his love to give him a single command - a sign that she reciprocates his feelings - but he knows that he "can't escape" the hold that love has on him.
The singer's love is not a healthy one, as he admits that the woman he loves is already with someone else. He questions the point of "caring" for someone who is sharing their affections with another, but nevertheless, he remains devoted to her. He dreams of her constantly, feeling as if his "very life is in her keeping." The singer is driven to his knees, a sign of his vulnerability and longing, but still, he cannot escape the hold that love has on him.
The lyrics of "Prisoner of Love" speak to the powerlessness that love can hold over a person, even when it is unrequited or impossible. The singer is trapped by his desire for a woman he cannot have, and he knows that he is a "prisoner" to this feeling. The song is a melancholic reflection on the ways in which love can be both liberating and confining.
