Say You're Mine Again
Perry Como Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And say the rose that blooms will never bloom again
But come what may I know I must have you again
My darling, say you're mine again!
Say that spring will never come again
And say the chapel bells will never ring again
No matter what will be I must be yours again So darling, say you're mine again!
If I were to lose all the world and its treasures
Who cares, let it be as it may
As long as I have you beside me
I'll always be happy that way!
Say I'll never see the rain again
And say I'll never hear a sweet refrain again
And say that I was wrong and I'm to blame again
But darling, say you're mine again!
Say I'll never see the rain again
And say I'll never hear a sweet refrain again
And say that I was wrong and I'm to blame again
But darling, say you're mine again!
Say you're mine again!
The song Say You're Mine Again by Perry Como is a passionate plea to a partner who has left the singer. The lyrics express a desperate need for the love that the partner provided, with the singer willing to give up all other aspects of life in order to regain it. The singer claims that even if the sun never shines again or if spring never arrives, it doesn't matter as long as they have their partner back. The repetition of the phrase "say you're mine again" reinforces the urgency of the singer's desire. The lyrics also suggest that the singer may have been at fault for the breakup, but they are willing to take the blame if it means they can reunite with their partner.
One interesting fact about this song is that it was written by the prolific songwriting team of Mack Gordon and Harry Warren, who collaborated on many popular songs during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Another interesting fact is that the song was originally written for the 1942 film "The Mayor of 44th Street" but was not included in the final version of the movie. The song's first recording was by Dick Haymes in 1943, but Perry Como's version became the most popular. The song was also covered by other artists such as Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.
The song reached number 6 on the Billboard chart in 1949 and helped establish Perry Como as a top performer of the era. Como's smooth, relaxed singing style was perfect for romantic ballads like this one. The song's simple, sentimental lyrics and lush orchestration were popular with audiences looking for an escape from the pressures of post-war life.

I was four when this song came out. I remember my parents slow dancing to it in the kitchen (where the radio was kept on a shelf). We didn't have a TV yet so it was my family's main source of entertainment. As Bob Hope would say "Thanks for the memories" Prof!
