I was lonely, that's how dreams begin
It was more than a moment of bliss
It's the first time I ever knew two hearts could kiss
When your eyes gave me that welcome sign
Something told me someday you'd be mine
The door of love was open, as I was passing by
When your eyes gave me that welcome sign
Something told me someday you'd be mine
The door of love was open, as I was passing by
And that's where I came in

With lyrics by Charles Tobias , Published 1947
The lyrics of Perry Como's That's Where I Came In express the idea of two lonely people finding love and happiness in each other's company. The opening lines reveal that the singer and their partner were both experiencing loneliness before their meet-cute. The second line of the song, "I was lonely, that's how dreams begin," implies that the singer had been longing for a meaningful connection before they met their partner. The chorus describes the moment they found each other: "The door of love was open, as I was passing by/ And that's where I came in."
The repeated line, "When your eyes gave me that welcome sign," suggests that the attraction between the two was mutual and instantaneous. The singer also reflects on the significance of their kiss, describing it as "the first time I ever knew two hearts could kiss." The song celebrates the transformative power of love, as the couple was able to overcome their loneliness and come together to form a lasting relationship.

What a voice. Up there with Sinatra and Torme on his day. And this was one of those days.
