The Twelve Days of Christmas is a traditional English Christmas carol that features a series of gifts given by a true love to their partner over the course of twelve days. The song begins on the first day of Christmas, where the true love gave a partridge in a pear tree, and then continues adding a gift each day up until the twelfth day of Christmas. On the second day, the true love gave two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree, and on the third day, they gave three french hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree. This repetition of adding gifts continues throughout the song until the final day when the true love gave twelve drummers drumming, eleven lords a-leaping, ten ladies dancing, nine pipers piping, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five golden rings, four calling birds, three french hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree.
The song has been interpreted in various ways. Some believe that the gifts in the song have a hidden religious meaning, with the partridge representing Christ and the other gifts symbolizing different aspects of Christianity. Others believe the song may have originated as a children's game where gifts were exchanged and forfeits demanded if a line was forgotten. However, it is also possible that the song was simply a way to celebrate the festive season and provide entertainment during the long dark nights of winter.
