What Am I Gonna Do About You?
Perry Como Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Didn't mind the others I knew,
But, what am I gonna do about you?
I thought that love and I were all through,
Then your smile came out of the blue,
Oh, what am I gonna do about you?
My chances slimmer,
Each passing day . . .
I could have held you longer,
But love was stronger,
You had your way . . .
And now, all my dreams,
And I've had a few,
Suddenly, are all coming true,
So, what are you gonna do about me?
And what am I gonna do about you?
And now, all my dreams,
And I've had a few,
Suddenly, are all coming true,
So, what are you gonna do about me?
And what am I gonna do about you?
The song "What am I gonna do about you?" by Perry Como is a reflection on the unexpected rekindling of a love that the singer thought was long gone. The opening line "Didn't mind the others I knew" suggests that the singer has not been particularly moved by other romantic prospects before, but this one is different. The next two lines "But, what am I gonna do about you? / I thought that love and I were all through" further establish the singer's surprise at the reappearance of this old love interest.
The third and fourth lines of the first verse "Then your smile came out of the blue, / Oh, what am I gonna do about you?" indicate that this love interest has now returned, catching the singer off-guard. The second verse "My hopes were growing dimmer, / My chances slimmer, / Each passing day" suggest that this love interest's return has come at a time when the singer had given up hope of finding love again. However, this new love is presented as being stronger than the singer's ability to resist: "I could have held you longer, / But love was stronger, / You had your way."
The final repetition of the chorus "And now, all my dreams, / And I've had a few, / Suddenly, are all coming true, / So, what are you gonna do about me? / And what am I gonna do about you?" suggests that this unexpected romance is turning into something real and lasting, and both parties are unsure of where it will lead. Overall, the song conveys the idea that love can pop up at any time and unexpectedly sweep us off our feet, no matter how much we thought it was gone for good.
