When You Were Sweet Sixteen
Perry Como Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I dreamed the world held naught but joy for me
And even though we drifted far apart
I never dream but what I dream of thee
I love you as I never loved before
Since first I met you on the village green
Come to me or my dream of love is o'er
When you were sweet sixteen
(I love you as I never loved before)
(Since first I met you on the village green)
(Come to me or my dream of love is o'er)
I love you as I loved you, when you were sweet
When you were sweet sixteen
(When you were sweet sixteen)
The lyrics of Perry Como's song "When You Were Sweet Sixteen" are a nostalgic look back at a lost love. The opening lines express the excitement and optimism of first falling in love. The singer remembers feeling as though the world held nothing but joy when they saw the "love-light" in their beloved's eyes. Even when the couple drifted far apart, the singer reminisces of dreaming only of their lost love.
The remainder of the lyrics deal with the singer's enduring love for their former partner. They declare that they love their ex "as [they] never loved before." The singer pleads for their former flame to come back to them, or risk their "dream of love" being over forever. The repetition of "I love you as I loved you, when you were sweet / when you were sweet sixteen" emphasizes the bittersweet feeling of the passage of time that has occurred since the two were last together. Overall, the song is a heartfelt and wistful reflection on the power of first love and the ache of missing someone who was once so important.
