Somewhere
Pet Shop Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a place for us
Somewhere a place for us
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us somewhere

There's a time for us
Someday a time for us
Time together with time to spare
Time to learn, time to care
Someday
Somewhere

We'll find a new way of living
We'll find a way of forgiving
Somewhere

There's a place for us
A time and a place for us
Hold my hand and we're halfway there
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow
Someday
Somewhere

Somewhere (somewhere)

There's a place for us
A time and a place for us
Peace and quiet and open air
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow
Someday
Somewhere

You wanna live in this lousy world?
Somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere
I feel pretty, oh so pretty

I feel pretty, oh so pretty
I feel pretty

Overall Meaning

Pet Shop Boys' song "Somewhere" is a reflective and hopeful ballad, expressing the need and desire for peace, quiet and a place to belong. It is a song about the search for something better amidst the chaos of the world, and the need for companionship and love to make it through. The song is musically simple, with a slow and steady beat, allowing the lyrics to take center stage.

The song references Romeo and Juliet with the lyrics "There's a place for us, somewhere a place for us", which quotes the song "Somewhere" from the musical "West Side Story". It is a song about hope and longing for a better future, which is a recurring theme in Pet Shop Boys' music.

Interestingly, the song was co-written by Leonard Bernstein, the composer of "West Side Story". Pet Shop Boys were given the task of writing lyrics for a song that Bernstein had composed for the 1997 Broadway production of "West Side Story".

The song was covered by Barbra Streisand and featured in her album "The Broadway Album" in 1985. The song was also covered by Bon Jovi in 1996 as a bonus track for their album "These Days".

Pet Shop Boys' version of the song was included in their 1997 album "Bilingual". It was released as a single in the UK in December 1997 and peaked at number 9 in the charts.

The song was performed by Pet Shop Boys at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The song's theme of hope and the optimistic melody make it the perfect choice for weddings and ceremonies.

The song has been used in several films and TV shows, including "The Simpsons", "The Nanny" and "Will & Grace".

The song's emotional melody and lyrics have made it a favorite among fans of Pet Shop Boys, and it remains a staple of their live performances.

Chords: Unfortunately, the chords for "Somewhere" are not available as the song is primarily performed with electronic instruments and orchestration.

@TiCup that has to be my favourite bit, I'll get him to correct the bits he stuffed up (the end) and do the whole thing with that in it.
It cracks me up every single time followed by the "Cause Neil can never admit he's wrong with anything, he's got a real problem" followed by Neil's "Chris, unfortunately, has the same problem"😂

My 19 yr old daughter has started listening to them and has been watching them over the years and laughing. On my main channel (my 12 yr old took that over) I'm doing her a playlist that has interviews and the like where the boys are being themselves, so Neil does the talking while Chris takes potshots at him😂
If you have any suggestions then that'd be brilliant, I can't find half of them! I have the NME one and the one where Neil took the piss out of a Russian tv show while Chris was pissing himself with laughter. Doesn't matter how often I hear Neil sound very un-Neil like and come out with that sort of thing, it still seems so weird. Hearing him swear like a sailor is hilarious, I know he's got a total potty mouth but it's still so funny hearing it.

I'm trying to find the interview where the interviewer asked Neil what he thought Chris brought to the Pet Shop Boys. Pretty sure he automatically thought of it being the typical question asked about Chris so went right off on a tangent with it. Spent 10 minutes describing how Chris is a musical genius who has always been the talent behind PSB and finishes with "Without Chris, there IS no Pet Shop Boys".
Chris then got asked the same question about Neil and responded with "Hmmm. Nah, can't think of anything sorry"😂

That ending when they both walk thru the opposite doors always gives me goosebumps. One of the best musical duo's in the genre.

HOW did I miss this?! I'm laughing my head off at Chris dropping his pants and them all cracking up as he madly tries to pull them back on as the curtain goes back up😂
I didn't catch what the boys said about it...the body language is pure Neil and Chris though, if there was ever a musical duo that can pull off acting like an old married couple then it's them.

Niel says "did you see take his trousers down ? Chris replies something like "Id didnt pull them down, you did! you ran around the back and pulled them down ....( something about switching places with someone ) then says "and im really unhappy about it" LMAO
