Beautiful Girl
Pete Droge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I woke up near rittenhouse square
There was noise in the hall; snow was flowing in the air
And I could see just then the flashing spark
Of the match to my first smoke

Some houses are built to last
It's the couple inside that change too fast
I can see their faces looking through the glass
They're not where they belong

I want to stay with you, babe.
Won't you let me stay?
You're a beautiful girl.
I'm right where I belong, babe.
I'm here with you.
You're a beautiful girl.

I see your feet at the edge of the bed
While an old love song is creeping into your head
And as your eyes just closed I could only guess
If you were dreaming of me again

Stained glass casts a flickering light
With the curtains closed I can't tell if it's night
But I know for sure that this sure feels right
With you here between my arms

I want to stay with you, babe.
Won't you let me stay?
You're a beautiful girl.
I'm right where I belong, babe.
I'm here with you.
You're a beautiful girl.

And I hope that you can take me
When I'm going out of my head.

And I hope that you will keep me
Keep me warm in your bed.

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Pete Droge's "Beautiful Girl" finds the singer waking up in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of Philadelphia. It is winter and snow is falling, while noise emanates from the hallway. The singer is lighting his first cigarette when he sees a couple looking out from behind their window, implying they feel lost in their relationship. The singer wants to be with the person he loves and insists that she is a beautiful girl. The second verse reveals the singer is lying in bed with the woman he loves, gazing at her feet as a love song echoes in her mind. The stained glass in the room filters in a flickering light, while the couple is between their arms. The singer hopes that his significant other will keep him warm in bed and take care of him when he feels heā€™s going out of his mind. The song is an ode to the beauty of love and the comfort it brings in the winter of our lives.

I get chills hearing this song, I love it and the association it has to the movie, which is far and away my all time favourite. I actually like that no one I talk to has seen it... I feel like it's my little secret. I watch it several times every winter and every time I'm so grateful that I found it when I was in my early twenties :-)

@KeyserSoze100179

Rik Elderton Agreed. It amazes me how many people haven't seen this movie. It slipped under the radar.

I do the same thing...its always in the Winter...(matches the Season in the movie itself, huh...). :)

I feel the same!! I had just moved to NYC from a tiny town when this came out in 1996; it resonates beautifully.

Iā€™ve found that when I tell friends about this movie, theyā€™re resistant because they think it sounds boring. But when they watch it, theyā€™re blown away. Every last one. One guy I told him about it years ago and he only recently watched it on Netflix. He texted me and said you have to watch this, itā€™s amazing. I love discovering these lost gems. I could only laugh!!
