How Can I Keep From Singing?
Pete Seeger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My life flows on in endless song
Above earth's lamentation.
I hear the real, thought far off hymn
That hails the new creation
Above the tumult and the strife,
I hear the music ringing;
It sounds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing?

What through the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it live'th.
What through the darkness round me close,
Songs in the night it give'th.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of Heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble, sick with fear,
And hear their death-knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near,
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging.

When friends by shame are undefiled,
How can I keep from singing?

Overall Meaning

Pete Seeger's "How Can I Keep from Singing" is a song that speaks to the power of song and music to bring hope and inspiration in difficult times. The lyrics suggest that even in the midst of turmoil and strife, the human spirit can remain resilient and unbroken if it finds a source of strength to cling to. The hymn-like melody and simple, repetitive structure of the lyrics reinforce this message of steadfastness and endurance.

The first verse suggests a sense of transcendence as the singer hears a "far off hymn" that celebrates "the new creation" and rises above the "lamentation" of the earth. The second verse speaks to the song's ability to provide comfort in the face of adversity, as it gives the singer "songs in the night" that help them weather the "tempest" and the "darkness." The third verse speaks to the power of song to inspire resistance and defiance against oppressive forces, as even "tyrants" must "tremble" in the face of the singer's unyielding spirit.

Overall, Seeger's "How Can I Keep from Singing" is an ode to the human spirit's ability to persevere through difficult times by finding solace and strength in the power of music and song.

Oohhh...Pete had such a wonderful way of singing...never fails to fill me with awe even after several decades of my listening and singing along with him. I do think he's still with us in some vital and inexplicable way.

Will do my humble imitation of this Pete Seeger version of this hymn at my local church this Sunday, Father's Day. Bless Pete. The world needs to remember this national treasure.

I saw him in concert twice, once solo and once with Arlo. Marvelous both times.

Pete was blacklisted in 1965 by Macarthy's HOUSE UNAMERICAN ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE. This song is particularly relevant now in light of the censorship imposed by the "western" governments on journalists. THANK YOU.
