Little Boxes
Pete Seeger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes
Little boxes
Little boxes all the same
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same

And the people in the houses all go to the university
And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same
And there's doctors and there's lawyers
And business executives
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same
And they all play on the golf course and drink their martini dry
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
And they all get put in boxes, and they all come out the same
And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same

There's a green one, and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one

And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pete Seeger's song "Little Boxes" describe the suburban lifestyle and culture of conformity. The little boxes represent the mass-produced suburban houses that all look the same, made of "ticky-tacky" materials. The people who live in the houses are also described as all being the same - they all go to university, are doctors, lawyers, or business executives, and have pretty children who go to school and summer camp, before ultimately also being put in boxes of conformity.

The repetition of "little boxes all the same" emphasizes the lack of individuality and sameness of the suburban lifestyle. The use of colors to describe the houses further reinforces this theme, since even though the colors may be different, the houses themselves are all identical. The reference to golf courses and martinis highlights the privileged lifestyle of the suburban elite, who have achieved success through their conformist ways.

Overall, the song is a critique of the suburban lifestyle, which values conformity and sameness above all else, and encourages people to pursue a certain path in life, without questioning whether it's truly what they want.

Peter in Private

I remember this from when I was a small child. Never understood what tickytacky was, but I got the point about uniformity. Looking back over more than 50 years, I like to think I didn't turn out just the same. And if that is true, it's at least in part thanks to this song.

Osvaldo Schilling

I have just listened to this song for the first time and I think Peter has described todays society quite perfectly from almost 60 years ago. The applause in the end says everything.
