And I Moved
Pete Townshend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I moved
As I saw him looking in through my window
His eyes were silent lies
And I moved
And I saw him standing in the doorway
His figure merely filled the space
And I moved
But I moved toward him

And I moved
And his hands felt like ice exciting
As he laid me back just like an empty dress
And I moved
But a minute after he was weeping
His tears his only truth.

And I moved
But I moved toward him

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pete Townshend's "And I Moved" describe a disturbing encounter between the singer and someone who appears to be an unwelcome intruder. The first verse describes the intruder looking in through the singer's window, with "silent lies" in his eyes. In the second verse, he is standing in the doorway and "merely fills the space". Despite feeling uneasy, the singer moves towards him. In the third verse, the encounter becomes more physical, with the intruder's touch being compared to ice, and the singer is laid back "like an empty dress". However, the mood changes abruptly when the intruder begins to weep, and the singer moves towards him again.

This song has been interpreted in different ways, but most agree that it seems to deal with issues of gender and power, with the intruder representing a potentially dangerous male figure, and the singer moving towards him possibly suggesting a willingness to engage in a potentially destructive relationship.

Unusual subject matter...but he makes it work. This album defies description and still
sounds new and unique almost 40 years later. I remember many years ago when Pete
was on Letterman...he came out to a huge ovation that went on and on. After 2 or 3
minutes, he shook Dave's hand and sat down. The cheering and clapping continued as
Pete again waved at the crowd. Dave asked "How are you, Pete" there was no response.
Pete nodded and waved at the crowd yet again. "Hey Pete, how are you"...again no
response. Dave then taps Pete on the shoulder a finally gets his attention. "Oh, hi Dave,
it's great to be here" he says. Dave asks (loudly) "How's your hearing these days?". Pete
responds "Not as good as it used to be...not quite sure how that happened". Love it!

@Mark Johnston No, that's not true. He wrote it on request from Bette Midler's manager for her to sing.

Stop making stuff up.

Generalmente las canciones que tienen la parte de piano inspirada y tocada por un capo como John "Rabbit" Bundrick se vuelven clásicos insuperables.

m guindon You hit it right on the head when you said this song is haunting.....it is an absolute masterpiece from an overlooked album....Pete Townsend is unquestionably one of the top 15 or so songwriters in the Rock era. This is certainly one of his best solo songs.FANTASTIC!! people should check out the entire album,"Empty Glass".

Possibly the most magnificent musical creation I know. I listen only occasionally lest it becomes ordinary. My God, the piano.
