I Put a Spell on You
Pete Townshend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I put a spell on you because you're mine
You better stop the things that you do
I ain't lyin', no, I ain't lyin'
I just can't stand it babe
The way you're always runnin' 'round
I just can't stand it, the way you always put me down
I put a spell on you because you're mine
I put a spell on you because you're mine
You better stop the things that you do
I ain't lyin', no, I ain't lyin'
I just can't stand it babe
The way you're always runnin' 'round
I just can't stand it, the way you always put me down
I put a spell on you because you're mine

I put a spell on you. I put a spell on you
I put a spell on you. I put a spell on you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pete Townshend's song "I Put A Spell On You" are a clear demonstration of frustration and powerlessness in a romantic relationship. The singer has reached a point where he can no longer tolerate his partner's behavior, which includes running around and constantly putting him down. He feels so strongly about it that he has resorted to casting a spell on her to make her change her ways.

The use of the phrase "because you're mine" suggests a possessive and controlling attitude from the singer, which could perhaps contribute to the tensions in the relationship. The repetition of the chorus reinforces the idea that the spell has been cast, and the singer is confident that it will be effective in changing his partner's behavior.

Overall, the song is a powerful expression of frustration, anger, and desperation in a romantic relationship. The use of magic to solve a relationship problem is a clever narrative device that adds an element of intrigue and mystique to the song.

This is my favorite version of one of my favorite songs of all time. I had this LP in the late '80s and do not recall ever knowing David Gilmour played on this. And I never knew video existed of this concert - this is AMAZING! Thanks so much for posting this. And you're right - it's a sin of epic proportions that this has not been released on DVD. I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
