Mary
Pete Townshend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mary, you are everything a man could want,
And I want you, Mary.
Did you know when you pushed me once away from you
The thing I knew grew inside me.

People are dancing for you now,
But I can't see why.
Can't they see that they can't beat
Nothing I have for you.

Mary, you are everything a man could need.
How I need you, Mary.
Yeah.
How I need you.

When I look at the hole in your coat.
I have to love you more.
I remember when I was a child
And my brother slept on the floor.

Oh, I know that the sun don't shine
Down on every man.
But when women let the my brother down.
I swore one day I'd land
Me one Mary
Swore I'd land me one Mary.
Oh, Mary.

When I look at the hole in your coat.
I have to love your more.
I remember when I was a child.
My brother slept on the floor.

Oh, I know that the sun don't shine.
Down on every man.
But when the woman let my brother down.

I swore one day, I'd land me mary.
I swore I'd land me mary.

I've loved this song since 1983, it's stunning, haunting and beautiful.

Me, too. I bought this on cassette when it came out and this was always my favorite. I'm kinda glad The Who didn't record it. This demo is pretty special.

One of my favourite musicians. An incredibly talented guitarist, composer, artist, creative person. Very complex man.

@fanniterrette

Pete achieved a hauntingly good sound on this demo. I've heard him do it live in recent years and, while enjoyable, the performance doesn't capture the million things that went right for Pete in putting this demo together.

Damn. Huge Pete fan, never heard it until now. Sick chord progression, nice sentiment, good rhythm; had the Who done this on Who's Next, this would have been one of THE great power ballads of the 70's.

@suesjoy

babbleon12 Who’s Next could have been a double album.

@Bioniking

@@suesjoy It basically was, called "Lifehouse," before it was abandoned

@Meegwun

For me, this song is forever dedicated to a Mary I knew and loved feverishly in my 20's. She haunted my dreams and my days for years. I hope she is well. "Oh Mary...!"
