Someone mean
Sometimes bossy
Sometimes in-between
Always feel like you are trapped
Like an animal who can't turn back
I, stayed here too long
Scratched at the skin until there's blood'Neath the midnight moon we almost fell in love
We were feeling comfortable
She was taller than most other girls
I, waited too long
On the closing of the year
It felt so nice to disappear
Improvised and individualized
Scratched at the skin until there's blood
'Neath the midnight moon we almost fell in love
We were feeling comfortable
She was taller than most other girls
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
Almost fell in love
The lyrics of Pete Yorn's song "Blood" depict a complex and tumultuous relationship between two individuals. The singer describes the person they are involved with as having multiple facets - friendly, mean, bossy, and sometimes in-between. This portrayal suggests a sense of unpredictability and volatility in the relationship, where the singer feels trapped, unable to escape or turn back. The imagery of feeling like an animal unable to escape adds a layer of desperation and helplessness to the situation.
The repetition of the line "Almost fell in love" throughout the lyrics hints at a sense of missed connection or unfulfilled potential between the singer and the other person. Despite being in a comfortable and familiar dynamic with this person, there is a lingering sense of longing and unspoken emotions. The mention of scratching at the skin until there's blood suggests an underlying sense of pain and self-destructive tendencies within the relationship.
The singer reflects on waiting too long and the passage of time, describing a moment of disappearance and a feeling of liberation. The mention of the midnight moon evokes a sense of intimacy and vulnerability, suggesting that in moments of darkness and solitude, the singer and the other person almost let their guards down and allowed themselves to fall in love. The emphasis on individuality and improvisation highlights the uniqueness of their bond, despite its challenges and complexities.
Overall, the lyrics of "Blood" by Pete Yorn convey a sense of longing, conflict, and missed opportunities in a complicated relationship. The repeated refrain of "Almost fell in love" captures the bittersweet nature of the connection between the singer and the other person, hinting at what could have been but ultimately was not fully realized. The themes of struggle, self-discovery, and the complexities of human connection are woven throughout the song, creating a poignant and introspective exploration of love and loss.
