Tell the story
Of a day when I was one and only
And the scene was set and the lights were low
You were burned in my eyes
Tell me why
Can ya call me
I'll tell ya everythingIt comes and goes
And the more I want it
is it hard to get it and I
Hear the cry in your voice
The further I stand it's moving away
The further I stand you're moving away
In my mind I was lonely
Got me thinkin' 'bout what you told me
And the way we were never meant to be
We were always out of time
The further I stand it's moving away
The further I stand you're moving away
The further I stand it's moving away
The further I stand you're moving away
The lyrics of Pete Yorn's song "Further" evoke a sense of nostalgia, longing, and introspection as the singer reflects on a past relationship. The opening lines set the scene in the singer's mind, where they vividly recount a time when they felt like they were someone's "one and only." The imagery of a dimly lit setting suggests a sense of intimacy and significance attached to this memory.
As the lyrics progress, the singer grapples with the fading presence of their former partner, questioning why they are no longer as connected as they once were. The repeated questioning of "Tell me why, can ya call me" conveys a desperation to understand the distance that has grown between them. Despite the singer's desire to hold onto the relationship, there is a consistent theme of things slipping further away, symbolized by the repeated phrase "The further I stand you're moving away."
The lyrics also touch upon feelings of loneliness and contemplation, as the singer reflects on conversations and moments shared with their partner. The realization that they were "never meant to be" and that their timing was perpetually off adds a layer of bittersweet reflection to the narrative. The image of being "always out of time" highlights a sense of missed opportunities and a lingering sense of what could have been.
Overall, the lyrics of "Further" convey a poignant sense of loss and distance, both physically and emotionally. The singer's struggle to hold onto a past connection, paired with the inevitability of things slipping away, creates a melancholic and introspective tone throughout the song. The repetition of the idea of standing further apart from the partner serves as a poignant metaphor for the widening emotional gap between them, emphasizing the transient nature of relationships and the complexity of human connections.
