Yorn started as a drummer who also played guitar. In 1990, he was drumming for his band in a high school talent contest when someone suggested he sing the Replacements song "Talent Show." That went over so well, a competing band asked him to sing Neil Young’s "Rockin' In the Free World" with them.
He was first recognized when the Farrelly brothers picked "Strange Condition" for their film Me, Myself & Irene.
He has gained increasing popularity following the use of his song "Just Another" on popular WB television show Dawson's Creek.
Another of his songs, Murray was used in the credits of the film Igby Goes Down
The song "Undercover" was used in the first Spiderman movie and appears on the soundtrack.
The song "Lose You" was used in the closing of an episode of House on Fox.

Are you outside or inside?
You are in
So what you want to know?
That everybody wants you?
You're old enough to say
What's really on your mind
Shame, has to take it aloneAre we not for between us
We are here
So what you gonna do
When everybody loves you?
You're old enough to know
What's really on their minds
They wanted the same thing
In love with the same thing
They wanted it all
So what you gonna do
When everybody hates you?
You're old enough to have known
What was really on their minds
They wanted the same thing
In love with the same thing
In love with the same thing
They wanted the same thing
In love with the same thing
Wanted the same thing
They wanted it all
The lyrics to Pete Yorn’s song Same Thing seem to be about the pressure to conform to societal norms and the fear of being rejected or ostracized if you don’t. Shame is mentioned repeatedly throughout the song, possibly alluding to the shame or guilt that someone might feel for not fitting in with others. The line “what you gonna do when everybody loves you?” suggests that being popular or well-liked comes with its own set of expectations and pressures.
The chorus, “They wanted the same thing, in love with the same thing, they wanted it all” reinforces this theme of conformity and wanting to be accepted. It could be interpreted that the “same thing” refers to societal or cultural expectations, and that people are in love with the idea or perception of what they should be, rather than being true to themselves. The repetition of this chorus highlights the pervasive influence of conformity and the pressure to fit in.
Overall, Same Thing seems to be a commentary on the struggle to balance fitting in with being true to oneself. It highlights the pressure put on individuals to conform and the consequences they face if they don’t. The repeated “shame” is a poignant reminder of the guilt and self-doubt that can come with trying to find one’s place in the world.
