Yorn started as a drummer who also played guitar. In 1990, he was drumming for his band in a high school talent contest when someone suggested he sing the Replacements song "Talent Show." That went over so well, a competing band asked him to sing Neil Young’s "Rockin' In the Free World" with them.
He was first recognized when the Farrelly brothers picked "Strange Condition" for their film Me, Myself & Irene.
He has gained increasing popularity following the use of his song "Just Another" on popular WB television show Dawson's Creek.
Another of his songs, Murray was used in the credits of the film Igby Goes Down
The song "Undercover" was used in the first Spiderman movie and appears on the soundtrack.
The song "Lose You" was used in the closing of an episode of House on Fox.

How it reminds me of you
Broken like a vision, an unfinished season
Terror had struck me, but all I could see is your soft skin
And I wondered
Inside the workhouse, you mind your own business
And I had the courage of two
And as I requested a lapse in your presence
So I wondered
When this day will end
Yeah, I wondered if we'd speak again.
Yeah, I wonder.
The lyrics to Pete Yorn's "Turn of the Century" tell a story of reflection and heartache. In the first stanza, the singer is looking at their own reflection in a piece of glass and is reminded of someone they have lost. The metaphor of the glass suggests that this person is no longer there and is only seen through the lens of memory. The singer is broken and feels a sense of terror, but all they are able to see is the softness of this person's skin.
In the second stanza, the singer is inside a workhouse, which represents a place of confinement or hardship. Despite this, they are able to muster the courage of two in order to approach this person. However, when they request a lapse in their presence, they are unable to come up with anything important to say. This moment represents the difficulty of expressing oneself when faced with overwhelming emotions. The singer wonders when the day will end and if they will ever have the chance to speak to this person again.
Overall, the lyrics of "Turn of the Century" express a sense of longing, heartbreak, and isolation. Through the use of vivid imagery and metaphor, Pete Yorn captures the complexity of emotions that arise when we lose someone we love.

Saw my reflection, covered in glass
I looked at my reflection in a mirror
How it reminds me of you
I thought of you when I saw my reflection
Broken like a vision, an unfinished season
My thoughts of you were fragmented and incomplete
Terror had struck me, but all I could see is your soft skin
I was scared, but all I could think about was how comforting it would be to touch your skin
And I wondered
I thought about the situation
Inside the workhouse, you mind your own business
You were focused on your work and not paying attention to me
And I had the courage of two
I felt brave and confident
And as I requested a lapse in your presence
I asked for some time alone without you
I couldn't think of anything important to say
I didn't have anything significant to talk about
So I wondered
I continued to contemplate the situation
When this day will end
I wondered when the day would be over
Yeah, I wondered if we'd speak again.
I also wondered if we would have the chance to talk again in the future
Yeah, I wonder.
So I kept wondering about everything
