Yorn started as a drummer who also played guitar. In 1990, he was drumming for his band in a high school talent contest when someone suggested he sing the Replacements song "Talent Show." That went over so well, a competing band asked him to sing Neil Young’s "Rockin' In the Free World" with them.

He has gained increasing popularity following the use of his song "Just Another" on popular WB television show Dawson's Creek.

Vampyre
Pete Yorn Lyrics

They had valuable traits
Just don't mention anything to him
All we ask of you
Is to break both his legs
For the trouble
Caused as vampyre
They don't even care about usIn the backs of their cars
It's too hot to handle
Too cold to shovel
In the beginning
They had positive traits
Just don't mention
Everything to him
All we ask of you
Is a stake through the heart
For the troubles caused as vampyre
And they don't even care about us
In the backs of their cars
It's too hot to handle
Too cold to shovel
Too cold to shovel
Too cold to shovel
The lyrics of Pete Yorn's song "Vampyre" seem to touch on the theme of exploitation and abuse by those in power. The opening lines refer to how the powerful group had "valuable traits" in the beginning but have since become a vampyre, an entity that feeds on others. The singer of the song asks someone to break both their legs as a form of revenge or punishment for the troubles they have caused.
As the song progresses, the singer asks for a stake through the heart of the vampyre, further emphasizing the sinister tone of the song. The chorus repeats the phrase "they don't even care about us," highlighting the disregard the powerful have for those beneath them. The line "it's too hot to handle, too cold to shovel" could be interpreted as a metaphor for the difficulties faced by those trying to confront the vampyre or those in power.
It's unclear what specific event or person inspired the lyrics, but they seem to convey a general sense of frustration and anger towards those who exploit others. The musical style of the song, with its driving drums and distorted guitar, reinforces the dark and intense nature of the lyrics.
