Relator
Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I didn't know what to do
I was tired, I was hungry, I'd fight
Now I'm away
I write home every day
And I see you on the TV at night
You can see that
You can leave
Whenever you want out
You don't relate to me
No, girl
You don't respect me
No, girl
No, girl, yeah
When I met you
I didn't know what to do
But I noticed that I didn't really feel
Now you're away
You write home everyday
I don't beg, I don't borrow, I steal
You don't think that
Life's for us to talk about
You can leave
Whenever you want out
You want out
You don't relate to me
No, girl
You don't respect me
No, girl
You don't relate to me
No, girl
You don't respect me
No, girl
You don't relate to me
No, girl
You don't respect me
No, girl
No, girl, yeah
The lyrics to Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson's song "Relator" explore the complexities of a strained relationship that seems to be on the brink of ending. The first verse hints at how overwhelming life was for Yorn when he first met the girl, and how he didn't know what to do with his emotions. Despite this, they continued on, and now that they are apart, Yorn writes home every day and sees her on TV at night. The second verse flips the perspective, instead focusing on the girl now that she is away. She writes home to Yorn every day, but he doesn't beg or borrow, he steals. The last verse repeats the refrain of "you don't relate to me, no girl, you don't respect me," positing that perhaps they have grown too far apart to have a functional relationship.
The repeated refrain of "you don't relate to me, no girl, you don't respect me" is a powerful and emotional statement. It speaks to the heart of what can make or break a relationship, and how sometimes people just grow too far apart to meet in the middle. Additionally, the use of "girl" as a modifier emphasizes the youthful and romantic nature of their relationship, adding an almost nostalgic layer to the song. Overall, "Relator" is a delicate and emotional exploration of love, loss, and the sometimes painful reality of growing apart.

I still come here a few times yearly. I love the entire album. Pete Yorn's an incredible musician. I do scoff at those who knock Scarlett, I mean, she's not trying to be or needs to be a Linda Rondstat. She's a very good vocalist and obviously has poise/charisma when performing.

Scarlett is great..special quality to her very good voice and very cool as a performer. She seems to get all kinds of negative vibes..I like her and think she's all kinds of cool and talented..
