This is one of my all tme favorite songs and the first time I heard this version. It will take getting use to. Also, I believe it is the first time I heard only one voice from Peter and Gordon sing an entire song,

Peter was never the stronger vocalist, that was Gordon, and it is Peter who is taking lead here. I wouldn't say it's the worst version ever, as I do like it, but I agree that it may have been better if it were performed in harmony as so many of their songs were.

Peter was the stronger of the two musically. In an interview in Tiger Beat he said when he met Gordon that he could play the guitar and Gordon couldn't yet. I'm guessing Peter was the more technically oriented, and that would account for his later career as a record producer.

Peter was more technical, but Gordon was a strong vocalist, as Peter himself would always point out.

@Winhelm6971 Yes they certainly do! Check out "If I were you" "You don't have to tell me" "Last night I woke" "Love me baby" "Hurtin is loving" "Wrong from the start" and "Start trying someone else". These are all available right here at You Tube and they wrote every one. They also covered other songs, such as their big hit "I go to pieces" which was written by Del Shannon.

@TonyHickschick The lead vocal here is Peter. Gordon usually took lead, and there are some songs where he sings entirely on his own as well, but they are probably considered "rarities"- such as this song is- in the Peter and Gordon catalog. Thanks for watching, and BTW I LOVE Tony Hicks:)

It loses something without the great harmony The Beatles gave it. The Fab Four also were better instrumentally on this song than Peter. Peter & Gordon did much better with their other great hits, "A World Without Love", "Lady Godiva", and "I Go To Pieces." Fabulous duo, but a dud on this cover. @powergirl901 Usually Peter and Gordon would sing harmonies as a duo, but on occasion one of them would step forward and sing a song solo. This is an example of that, Peter is the singer here. There are also songs where Gordon sings solo, such as "As long as I have you" and "Who's loving you".

Not really. Peter sang it fine. Hell, he did it 1.5 steps LOWER than the Beatles. He sang Paul's part (which is the main melody) in the key of "B" which is 1.5 steps lower than the key of "D" which is the Beatles key. Anyway, he did a fine job.

Nothing against P&G, but McCartney (primarily) and Lennon made them, along with Dell Shannon. Having your sister not only date the ex Beatle, PM actually lived in the Asher home.Their contemporaries Chad & Jeremy who were a bit older and started out in 1960,wrote their own material and had more on camera charisma (professionalism) appearing on several top US TV shows in the 60`s. P&G should not have recorded this. The single vocal, style and production ruins one of the finest ballads the Beatles wrote and recorded. I mean c`mon, you're going up against John and Paul, ridiculous.

@Larry Autry I think everyone understands that that is the intended meaning. However, I take it that Baskerville22 is referring to the grammatical stumble: the case error in the use of the objective "her" rather than the subjective "she." It's not that one should expect perfect grammar from popular songs, and it is true that "you would love me more than she" (i.e., "more than she does") might sound a little fussy. Still, quite literally, the grammar that John uses communicates that he is asking, "Would you love ME more than you love HER?"

Not a great act, Peter is not a good singer especially as his mother was a professor at the Guildhall School of Music (taught George Martin there), no one would have heard of them today but for the McCartney connection. Although he is a successful producer.

@Serenadesong she should have (maybe she tried and he just wasn’t up to it) at least coached him to recognise that he really wasn’t a good voice (compared to other professional singers, if course compared to myself he’s Freddie Mercury). The fact that they had moderate success (more so in the US than U.K.) is a testament to my point, he’s not a good lead, should have stick to their formula of nice harmony of their contrasting voices. Just my two-penneth.
BTW you have no idea of the breadth of my musical appreciation, which you underestimate by a considerable margin, if it was meant as an insult then you failed water off a ducks back.

Not sure how his mother being a professor has anything to do with musical ability. Since you state that he cannot sing are you suggesting she was a bad teacher?

Seeing as they released several albums, and had hits apart from Paul (Shannon's I go to pieces and Lady Godiva) I am pretty certain they would still be known today without him. He did help them but they also proved capable without him. Peter was not a strong singer, but their harmonies are excellent and Gordon was a very good singer.

I get it. People love The Beatles and they were a great band, but there were other great musicians in the 60's. It was an amazing decade for music. I suggest you try broadening your horizons.
