If I Fell
Peter & Gordon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Would you promise to be true
And help me understand?
'Cause I've been in love before
And I found that love was more
Than just holding hands
If I give my heart to you,
I must be sure
That you,
Would love me more than her
If I trust in you oh please,
Don't run and hide
If I love you too oh please
Don't hurt my pride like her,
'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I,
Would be sad if our new love,
Was in vain
So I hope you see that I,
Would love to love you,
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two.
If I fell in love with you
The song "If I Fell" by Peter & Gordon is about the fear and uncertainty of falling in love, especially after experiencing heartbreak in the past. The singer is questioning whether the person they are in love with will be faithful and honest with them, and if they will truly understand and support each other. They have been in love before, but it was more complicated than just holding hands. The singer is worried about giving their heart away and wants to be sure that the person they love will love them back more than anyone else. They ask for honesty and reassurance, hoping that their new love will not hurt them like their previous lover did.
The lyrics are emotional and vulnerable, expressing the fear and pain that come with falling in love. The melody is gentle and tender, with a touch of melancholy, perfectly conveying the theme of the song. It's a beautiful ballad that captures the essence of love, with all its uncertainties and complexities.

If I fell in love with you
If I were to fall in love with you.
Would you promise to be true
Would you commit to an honest and faithful relationship?
And help me understand?
And guide me through this experience?
'Cause I've been in love before
Because I have experienced love in the past.
And I found that love was more
And I discovered that love is more than just physical affection.
Than just holding hands
More than just the physical act of holding hands.
If I give my heart to you,
If I choose to give you my love,
I must be sure
I need to be certain,
From the very start
Right from the beginning,
That you,
That you, as the recipient of my love,
Would love me more than her
Will love me more than any previous partner.
If I trust in you oh please,
If I put my faith in you, I implore you,
Don't run and hide
To not let fear or commitment issues cause you to flee,
If I love you too oh please
If I also grow to love you,
Don't hurt my pride like her,
Please don't wound me emotionally like she did,
'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
Because I am unable to endure that kind of suffering.
And I,
And as a result,
Would be sad if our new love,
I would be disappointed if our potential relationship,
Was in vain
Was fruitless or unfulfilling.
So I hope you see that I,
Thus, I desire for you to recognize that I,
Would love to love you,
Truly yearn for a loving relationship with you,
And that she will cry
And that my previous partner may experience distress,
When she learns we are two.
Once she finds out about our newfound relationship.

I'd actually never heard Peter & Gordon's version of IF I FELL before! This is very nicely done. Thank you very much for sharing, Serenadesong!

This song is so beautiful that in all the versions that I know have been wonderful.
This version of Peter and Gordon is nostalgic.
Thanks.

This is one of my all tme favorite songs and the first time I heard this version. It will take getting use to. Also, I believe it is the first time I heard only one voice from Peter and Gordon sing an entire song,
Guy Sharwood
Peter did a fine vocal on this version. Nice to hear a lot of stuff I've never had a chance to hear pre-You Tube.

They put their own style to the song, however I must say Lennon singing it is better.
Serenadesong
Peter was never the stronger vocalist, that was Gordon, and it is Peter who is taking lead here. I wouldn't say it's the worst version ever, as I do like it, but I agree that it may have been better if it were performed in harmony as so many of their songs were.

Sem comparações com os Beatles. Beatles são únicos!!!!!!!!
Guy Sharwood
Peter was the stronger of the two musically. In an interview in Tiger Beat he said when he met Gordon that he could play the guitar and Gordon couldn't yet. I'm guessing Peter was the more technically oriented, and that would account for his later career as a record producer.
Serenadesong
Peter was more technical, but Gordon was a strong vocalist, as Peter himself would always point out.

Gordon introduced Peter to this kind of music. Peter liked jazz.
